how much play should a engine have while running at wot?

Okay Maybe this is a dumb question plus I was out the other day never paid it a whole lot of attention but running along on choppy water I noticed the motor bounces around back there a good bit . I have always keep a check on the jack plate bolts . Every thing tight . I know with that much weight its gonna bounce around a little it would half to keep from just breakin off im sure. Just wondering how much is expected . Thanks Guys and hope everyone had a merry Christmas...........

Ultimately, you want "little or no play" in the mounts, swivel pin/bracket, or the steering.

With the engine OFF, and trimmed down (on the trailer), grab the anti-ventilation plate (above the prop) and rock the engine side-to-side and up-and-down to determine where the "loose" components are.

You'll want to address any play immediately.... and engine that is "changing course" without your input can lead to "undesirable, and sometimes UNMANAGEABLE handling characteristics"!

    1/4" is "roughly normal".

Much more than this (more than 3/8", or loose play at the bushings for the cylinder) is NOT normal.

On the drivers side on hydraulic steering rod there is a slack adjuster(looks like a notched nut with an allen screw though it). Loosen the allen screw and thighten the nut with a pair of pliers while moving the motor back and forth. This will take out any freeplay in the system.
