    Computer Problems

My computer crapped out on me Friday. Went to Best Buy yesterday and the geek told me it would cost a minimum of $200 to fix it. The computer is 4 years old and only has 1 gig of memory. So I bought a new one. The problem now is retrieving my business records from last year for taxes. It sucks having a computer go down. Make sure your anti-virus is up to date and working.

The wife and I keep old fashioned paper records for taxes. Most of my computer files are on a jump drive.

I have most of mine on a jump drive too. I'm just scared that the jump drive will infect the new computer. Been playing with it and it looks like I will be ok.

Just take the HDD out of the old computer and open the case on a working one. Unplug your CD drive and plug the old HDD in there. Then boot your computer, sometimes a computer will not boot but you can still get data off the drive. Once the computer comes up then check your My computer icon and you should have a drive letter for your old drive usually the same as what your CD drive was. Then just copy and paste what ever you need to the new computer. After you are done just plug your Cd back in and take the old drive out and use it for a paper weight.

    Re: Computer Problems (KLSU)

the geek squad should have helped you out with transferring information from the old to the new.

there are several ways to get your data over.

just always remember to have backups of your backups. You may never use it, but in the case you do you will be a happy camper.

And dont think those jump drives wont crap out either.

with the prices of external drives now a days I would buy 2 and use those for backups if its important information.

There are also lots of companies doing very inexpensive off site data backups over the internet.

    Re: Computer Problems (bayouXpress)

I worked on it today and printed up what I needed. At least I have what I need to do taxes.
Geek Squad said they could transfer files, but it would cost about 100 bucks. I trashed all my jump drives and will start over backing up. My info is on jump drives now but I didn't want to infect my new computer.
If I understood all this computer stuff better,I probably would not have so many problems. I'm thinking of going to Nicholls and take a few classes. When I went to Nicholls, we were lucky to have a calculator.

My first year of college was at La Tech. The engineering students were still using slide rulers. We called them slip-sticks.
