    250 xb rattle?

Don maybe you can help me with this... and maybe then i can quit bugging you so much.. but this is my first mercury and i know very little about it.. owned rudes for 20+ yrs. This xb has a rattle after i get up to speed and throttle back a little. it does not sound like it is internal. and does not effect the preformance at all. it sounds like something loose. the guy i bought the boat from said it been doing it for several yrs... he said he thought it was some kind of little plate loose. it's not real bad but because i bought it used, i worry about everything... i don't know where to even look for something that may have worked loose.. i am fairly mechanically inclined, but this motor is like greek to me.. any advice would be appreciated, and should i be too concerned.. it preforms great except fuel consumption... Thanks in advance.. i know you can help me....

    Dallas:

    I'd start by checking:

    -Hood Latches
-Trim Tab or Anode Plate above prop
-Rectangular Anodes just above Anti-Ventillation Plate
    -Engine Mounting Bolts
    -Any jackplate mounting hardware
    -Steering Hardware
    -Belt/Alternator
-Lower Engine Mount Covers (black plastic rectangular cover on each side of the midsection
-Tuner (must remove gearcase in order to check this)

Those are some of the more "common" sources.

As mentioned by Don, this might be the most likely "culprit".

I own the same engine and had a similar issue until I tightened the screws. Hope that this helps. Additionally, there is the possibility of "harmonics" due to the reeds. If you need a .pdf manual for the motor, PM me and I will help you out.

I'll tell you where to look for a dollar If it has a torquemaster it most likely has a 2 piece driveshaft. The coupler gets worn a little and causes a rattle when not under a serious load. Check it and replace coupler if it's loose feeling.

Reeds----flaapin----at least I have heard that many times when either I or others ask. That is if there is nothing else loose.

It is a nomal thing-- mine has done it since it was new---usually the loadest in midrange-- good luck and I hope the other would agree

XB motors have carbon fiber reeds and rubber coated cages. They should not rattle at any rpm.

Mine rattles, especially when idling around. The minute I pour the coals to it, it stops.

One other simple thing that wasn't mentioned was the factory motor tilt support. When it is in the retracted position, it rests against the clamp bracket loosly spring loaded. It will vibrate when running. Mine had also lost the spring and that makes it rattle even more.

    Re: 250 xb rattle? (ssimpala71)

Again-If this motor has a torquemaster on it the driveshaft is a two piece shaft with a couler in the middle. Easy way to see if that is where the noise is coming from is to take the lower unit off and tape the shaft and the coupler together with electrical tape. Almost willing to bet that is the rattler. Was on mine and I put a one piece shaft in it and stopped the noise.
