    Stranded on the water

200 Opti trim motor went out and can not get it up to load it on the trailer. Loosened and removed plastic screw on starboard side but motor will not move. Anyone have any information on how to release the pressure to tilt the motor? I can be reached at 417-850-5665.

My motor would not trim down last weekend , I thought the trim motor had failed. I took off the cowling and there are three relays right above the trim switch on the motor, two are for trim one is for fuel pump. Anyway I tapped the relays with a screwdriver and the trim worked. This had happened to me before on a different boat. Hope this helps.

If you loosen the MANUAL RELIEF screw approximately 1-1/2 turns COUNTER CLOCKWISE (do not attempt to REMOVE it), you should be able to lift the engine up.

Requires a LOT of lifting force (you may need a buddy to assist). Tighten screw just snug (do not overtighten) when trim is at an acceptable level.

Relays, trim motor, connections, switches are all possibilities (in that particular order, BTW).

If posting back for further assistance (now that you're likely off the water)- be sure to provide your Engine Serial Number.

Thank you for the replies, unfortunately we were forced to leave the boat on the water. I think we made a crtical error in that we unscrewed the relief screw (plasitic screw) until it came out. Fluild leaked out at a good rate and I am possitive water entered into the system. Two of us were unable to lift the motor, I know we put a good amount of force on the motor as the back end of the boat was lifting up. I think because we were in the water lifting the boat and not just the motor it made lifting the motor impossible for us. Currently the boat is sitting on a lift and we intend to go down Tuesday evening and use a strap and cumalong attached to the dock to raise the motor. This may not be the best way but it is what we have come up with currently to raise the motor. If there is a better method I am open to ideas of how else we could lift it sitting in a dock on a lift. Sorry Don I did not think to get the serial number before we left it.

We have tried 3 local marine dealers and none of them can get to it this week on the water so we are left to try the plan above.

Make sure you are loosening the correct screw. The manual release screw is accessed through an opening in the right side of the engine mounting bracket.

You can see the white looking flat head screw through the side of mount.

Thank you for the picture, that is the screw we loosened and removed. Live and learn if it ever happens again we will know not to remove it.

Keep in mind- if the engine is fully DOWN, you will have to pull BACK (away) from the boat, before you can lift UP.

If that screw was removed in the WATER, you will need to have the system purged/cleaned (almost always requires complete dis-assembly).

Thanks for all the help, the plan worked and we were able to raise the motor. The boat is safely home and now the repair work begins.
