    birds nest heaven

well i went out yesterday morning and tried out my new bait caster, lets just say it was not good after about 10 times of untangling it i put it away and went back to my spinning reel. how long does it usually take to get the hang of these things.

Are at least good at picking out the backlash....... I don't know to many folks that still doesn't get one every now and then... just keep practicing and it will come to you....."never give up".... Ricky196

Cast as far as you can, pull out about 10 yrds more, then put a piece of elecrical tape around the spool. Reel in your line, then your set. It won't eleminate backlashes, but it helps minimize them.

Also make sure your spool tension and brakes are set right.

    And KEEP CASTING!

You might need to tighent your "brakes". Tighten them and as you cast loosen it until it's just right. I still get them nest to.

Evil just go back to your original post and re-read all the tips and they will be a little easier to understand now that you have had a go at the BC. TBJ

Try tightening the "knob" on the same side as the handle. Reel a bait/weight to the tip of the rod. Push the thumb bar, then loosen the knob until the bait/weight starts to fall. You want it to fall slow and hit the floor and as soon as the it hits the floor the spool should stop spinning. Should be just about right. From there cast it around and adjust as you need it. It does take time in fine tuning a reel. Another note, as you switch out baits on that reel, you will have to re-adjust cause all baits are different. Once you get the hang of it, those spin cast reels will be old news.

Prior to doing above, set the dial on the opposite side of the handle to 0(Min) Then Dont forget after setting it like above, to set this dial back to 75% or more. You have a pretty nice reel to learn on.

The wind was blowing like a sonvagun yesterday. If you were casting into it at any angle, you were bound to get birdsnest. In wind like that I usually max out the magnetic brake.
