    spillway water levels(pic added)

Anybody got any report on the fishing/water levels on the spillway side around Big Pigeon/Grand Lake/Little Bayou Sorrel? I've got a tournament this upcoming weekend out of Doiron's and I saw the river stage @ Morgan City is pretty low...so I was just wondering what some of you may have seen out there lately. Thanks!

    Re: spillway water levels (FLIPPINB)

It was a tournament for EASL(East Ascension Sportsman's League). It was their open tournament that they have every year. 22 boats fished, me and my partner finished 6th with 11.54 pounds with a 3.45 lb big bass. There were 3 sacks in the 13 lb + range that got spots 1-3, one 12 lb bag, and an 11.8 pound bag that beat us. We had 3 fish in the 2-2.5 pound range, that one nice 3.45 pounder, and one that barely barely kept. If we could have gotten rid of that one small one and got another 2-3 pounder, we would have finished in the top 4(which were the money spots). It seemed like everyone caught fish pretty good though. Winning sack came from the Verret side I believe...but most fished the spillway side...us included. We caught the majority of our fish on spinnerbaits.

Heartbreaker...I had 1 towards the end of the day that was at least 2.5 lbs and it run me down into a tree and broke me off...had I boated that one, we would have finished in the money. But oh well, that's the way it goes sometimes.

On another note, I just started using these new rods that just came out a few months back called Dobyns rods made by Gary Dobyns out of California. If any of you are looking for a rod that is super sensitive, balanced, comes with a great warranty, and won't cost you an arm and a leg...check out the Dobyns Champion series rods. I've been using the 703c as an all purpose stick for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, senkos, etc...the 704c is just an AWESOME jig stick(it's that time of year )...and the 734c as my ribbit/Spro frog rod. They retail for $169.99 and are worth every penny of that. If any of you would like any more info on these rods, you can contact me at justin.mayers@gmail.com and I'll help you out as much as I can. I have been blown away by these rods..hopefully some of the local stores will start carrying them.. check em out.. http://www.dobynsrods.com

    Re: spillway water levels (frogpond11)

I figured I'd share a pic of my 3.45 pounder from the 12/1 tourney..I thought the fish was a little bigger than that when I caught it, but can't argue with a scale..

Taking em out of the spillway side and stocking the Verret side...

My scales lie to me, too.

    Nice fish!

Is it just me or is the water REALLY low?

Re: spillway water levels (Alan S)

Oh yea, the water is WAY low on the spillway side right now. We alternated between two areas the whole day fishing and both were extremely low. We made a pretty long run from Doiron's and it was weird seeing everything that low. Be careful if you're heading out that way, that's for sure. I'll be out there again this Saturday..

    Re: spillway water levels (frogpond11)

Do you know the name of the guys who won it? Ive been in the EASL Bass Club for the past two years.

I tore my lower-unit up in our classic last month so I didn't get to fish our open tournament. Floating logs suck.

Our scale has seriously been broke and repaired numerous times in the past year, so it may lie seriously.

    Re: spillway water levels (ZL)

That's good to know about the scale ZL!!

I don't remember the names of the guys that won it, but they had 13.9 lbs. He was in a Ranger I believe, a red one. He and his partner fished the Verret side. That's about all I know. I'll probably be fishing the majority of the EASL events this year though, so I'm sure I'll get to meet you at some point if you plan on fishing some of their tournaments this year..

Keep on stocking the Verret side, My camp on Belle River should be finished in May or June for some serious fishing.

    Re: spillway water levels (frogpond11)

Sounds like Jimmy Templet with the red ranger. Yep, I plan on fishing again next year, we should have a meeting and banquet type deal at Ascension sometime in January to sign up and vote on the first tournament location. The new format that we are starting next year should make the club alot better. Previous years we drew partners amongst the club members and usually only had 5 to 8 boats a tournament. but now we will fish every tournament as a member guest, only allowing the same guest to fish with you twice in a year, or you can go into a draw amongst others members that don't have a partner in which the members will be paired together, or we probably can put up the $50 and fish alone. We should have a good 15 to 20 boats each event or more if all the new members join that plan on it, and we won't have to deal with drawing a dead end partner. We also take a road trip to Lake Bruin each year in the spring.

We just can't hang with Gary, kingfisherman 2 years in a row. Only one guy challenges him, and thats Gonny. The entire club tries trash talking to bring him down off his pedestal, but we have yet to find anyway of affecting his consistency on the water. Come on back!
