    removing oil inj. on 97 225 3.0

I just bought a 97 ZX300 Skeeter with a 225 3.0 , my first 3.0 I don't know anything about the 3 litre motors. I know 2.5 inside out. So I'm not totally clueless but can the oil inj. be removed from this old eng. If so is the mixing ratio the same as the 2.5 16oz to 6 gals. Thanks in advance for your input.

    Re: removing oil inj. on 97 225 3.0 (showboat1)

I have a 1998 225 EFI and had a mechanic remove the oil injection. He told me to make sure I mix the oil with the gas at 50:1 ratio every time I went to the gas pump. The only draw back I see is it smokes more at low RPM than with the oil injection on it. It runs very good at higher RPM s and starts up every time I put it in the ramp. One good thing about it is I know it getting good lubrication on the pistons. A good formula for determining how many ounces of oil to add to the amount of gas is ( number of gallons X 128 / 50) gallons multiplied by 128 then divide that number by 50. This will tell you how many ounces of oil to mix with the amount of gas you pumped. Or you can multiply each gallon of gas by 2.56 this will also give you the amount of fluid ounces of oil as described above. Sorry for being so long winded Hope this helps.

Thanks for the serial number.... just wanted to confirm which version of the engine you had.

There are a few things that can be done on these..... the first installment (cowling mod) is "pinned" at the top of this forum.

Expecting to see more information on this version EFI to come from the same author in the future.... stay tuned.

Thanks everybody I talked to a merc mech. , he said Mercury don't offer a plastic plug to replace the oil pump on the 3.0 oil inj. as of yet, so I'll leave the pump in and just plug the lines . The motor is a 97 model I don't trust the oil inj system .

Look. I run the crap out of my 3 liter. Leave the oil injection on. It will work. It will also help your motor perform to it's potential. Variable ratio oil injection is a proven performance inhancer.

I agree. It would be a rare thing to attribute a failure due to the oil pump, or related part on a 3.0.

Unless you made major changes to the porting, you aren't going to turn a 3.0 the RPM's of a 2.5.

To address your original question as to what you "can" do to your engine.... Richard (kllr bee) has been kind enough to make a post on the subject, which is now pinned to the top of the forum for "future reference". Thank you Richard!

    Re: removing oil inj. on 97 225 3.0 (showboat1)

I recently upgraded my 3.0 liter. I purchased a set of Hydro Tec carbon fiber reeds. I also did the cowling mod and did the lower unit plugs on the water intake. I gained almost 5 mph(gps) and 300-500 rpms. Also adding sea foam or startron cleaned the motor out.I was also told you can do a flywheel lightning. Talk to simon motor sports and Wayne from hydro tec, they both were a great help....
    Just my 2 cents

Re: removing oil inj. on 97 225 3.0 (runninrusty)

My first 3 liter was a 1997 225 EFI. I picked up 12 mph gps when I did all the mods I have mentioned in the 3 liter mod article at the top of this section. Went from 72 to 84.5 on a 20 ft Pro Vee Bumble Bee. Just depends on what you want to spnd to go fast.
