I would recommend that you follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual (specifically the "once a year or every 100 hours... whichever comes first" items.

Additionally, at your hours, I'd recommend the following items:

-Leakdown Test on engine (for a benchmark of it's "Bill of Health")
-Replace Accessory Drive Belt (for compressor and Alternator)
-All 100 hour service items (gear lube, greasing, spark plugs, Quickleen, stabilizer)
-COMPLETE water pump replacement (if it's not been done in the last year/100hrs)

As far as hours... that is very much dependant on running habits and maintenance. I've seen major failures below 100 hours... and I've seen motors well into the "thousands of hours" that still run strong.

It sounds as though you've been taking good care of it.... keep that up!

Re: What do I need to do 440 hours (EuropeanAM)

Ihave been told that 04 250 XS built by mercury racing are some of the best motors they made becuse they are built by one person at the factory. Is this true and do they beef up anything on these motors parts wise than a stock 250 or 225 THANKS AGAIN............

There are definitely "differences" between your motor and a "standard production" Optimax (there wasn't a 250 Optimax in standard production back then).

They are "custom built"... mostly by hand.
