    Spark plug question on 250XS

I've got a 2003 250XS , that I bought used last fall, I've had no issues with it. I was just looking to do some preventive maintence on it ,I was going to change the plugs, So, I order a set of IZFR6J NGK's based of the info at the top of this page, however when I took out the old plugs that were in it, I found them to be NGK # PZFR6H .I'm now confused what plug does this beast run on . Your input needed, These plugs are huge money almost $15 apiece and I really don't want to make a mistake and have to by another set right away, Let me know what ones I need . THANKS!!

Re: Spark plug question on 250XS (bigrg)

You will want to use the IZFR6J plugs (the PZFR6H is an "outdated" platinum plug that is no longer used).

IZFR6J is the updated IRIDIUM spark plug.

anyone know if there is a reason for that plug and why can't a diff cheaper plug work even if you have to change them more often

Re: Spark plug question on 250XS (Bullet20dc)

I know these plugs are expensive... and believe me, we're always on the prowl for a way to save us, and our customer's some money. I've bought large quantities of specific plugs from "discount vendors"... only to find out that the "defect rate" on that particular batch of plugs negated all, or most of the savings (not to mention wasted a ton of time determining which plugs were bad, plus customer's that are annoyed when their engine doesn't run right). Have found an overall failure rate on NGK's (direct from Merc) to be less than 1 in 100... which is highly preferable to 5 or 10 in 100!

To my knowledge, there is no "workable, suitable iridium replacement" for that particular spark plug.

Experience has shown that the Merc's (and many other outboards also) are VERY picky about using the "correct" spark plug- correct brand, reach, heat range, and composition.

IF there was a suitable plug, I'm just going to wager a guess that you'd be buying enough "additional plugs" that any cost savings would end up being negated... either due to defective plugs or excessive fouling (plug related) issues.

Just my .02 worth on the subject........

    Lou:

Absolutely! I did not have any intention of slamming "sparkplugs.com"... as a matter of fact, I've never personally bought a single plug from "them".

It does sound like they have some great prices for consumers!

My whole point was to use "caution". I had one case where a customer bought 6 Champion QL77CC plugs from ______ (national chain) auto parts by special order. 3 of the six plugs were bad... and you can bet his motor ran WORSE with the new plugs, than it did with the old ones!

That being said- if it's the same brand & part number plug, good price, and you get all of your plugs in good condition- you've found a great supplier!
