What do you guys think of Wipers? I think they are possibly tough on other species of fish in our fisheries. Opinions??

Agree.. Right below strippers and eyes ....for eating every frickin thing in the lake
I hate them. If I could, I'd take everyone out of the lake and give them to people to eat. They will put a hurting on a school of bass fry. I have seen whites do it.![]()
Cheaper to keep a kid in tourney fishing than paying attorneys to keep them out of jail !!

they are the greats thing that has ever happened to fishing ,, there would be a total loss in the fishng world if it wasn't for the wiper,, all you would need is 3 baits, a LV500 LC, a shad colored chugbug and a #5 sexty shad.. it is so nice to have such a wonderful fish to catch... if i didn't know better i would say you all were a bunch of wiper haters![]()

They suck. They put them in lakes for folks who can't catch real fish. They bring in alot of revenue to the state of KS, and because of that they are there to stay.![]()

one thing we must realize is that the major lakes in kansas pretty well are old and have gone down hill for bass so instead of them being the dead sea at least we have another hard fighting fish to catch. Would a guy rather go to eldoardo and try and catch 5 smallies under 16 inches or go catch 30 or 40 wipers up to 7 pounds that pull the line off your reel till it's smoking? That lake will never be what it once was in the 80's and people need to realize that and be glad there is another fun fish to catch. All this being said, i've never caught a wiper in kansas, i'm just saying it's another option for some of the aging lakes around. And someone mentioned they are for "people who don't know how to fish". I call bull on it, if you want to teach a kid to catch bass where are you going to take them..........a pond, take a kid to one of our lakes with a zebco and teach him to bass fish and he will be there 8 hours to catch 2 fish, give him a rattle trap and some schooling action on some wipers and they will dang near pull the boat around and he will want to be back for more. Again, i'm not for or against but, sometimes people think bass are the only thing in the world and that if your not fishing for them you are not a good fisherman or shouldn't be on the lake...........reminds me of half the fly fisherman in the world. Sorry guys, i'm not trying to be grumpy, we just have to realize we are not ever going to have texas, oklahoma or missouri kinds of lakes here.

While I know this if off the subject of wipers... Your statement, "That lake will never be what it once was" is probably true, but I would argue (not with you, with the state) that it doesn't have to be... Example. Smithville Lake, MO had an abundant population of big fish in the 90s, it also had grass. The grass died due to water fluctuations or what ever and the fishing fell off. Any first year fisheries biologist will tell you that grass equals bass. Smithville has been replanted with grass and the big fish are showing up again. When I fished there last Sunday every place I hit seemed to have a patch of grass growing. I'm sure there's more to fisheries management than planting grass, but the point is that a little management on the part of the state of KS would go a long way toward improving the state's fisheries. IMHO, I think MO does a much better job of managing for bass.
Bob,
I totally agree with you and the exact differnce in it all is that kansas doesn't do what missouri, oklahoma and texas do. By the way i do think they tried to plant grass in eldorado and it didn't work very well. maybe they didn't try hard enough, not sure but, i think they tried. They had some grass planted and had fences around them to protect them at the time. I don't know if it ever worked or not though.

Ummm.....I take my 4 and 6 year old boys to Wilson and they catch smallmouth all day long, sometimes more fish than they can catch in a pond. They prefer the lake over a bug infested pond and they love to steer the big rig.![]()
Cool Jason, it's a blast being on the boat on a lake, especially one that pretty. didn't mean to start trouble. Just my opionon here......Wipers aren't the devil....they just fight like it.![]()
