Changing motor height on Pro XS?

Just got my new 250 Pro XS installed and have now got 5 hours on it. Finally opened her up only to discover I can't get above 5450RPM's @ 72mph/ GPS with 30 water pressure with jackplate maxed out. I'm running a stock 27" Tempest prop on a 2001 TR-21. I have a CMC hydraulic plate with a 2" spacer (8" total set back). As I measure my motor I'm only 4 3/4" above the transom and I feel I need to be around 6"+. I can get 1" by moving the motor to the top hole in the plate and another 1" by moving the plate up one hole in the 2" spacer. Is there a safe way to do this without purchasing a Mercury lifting eye that screws into the flywheel? If I have to purchase one what is the cost? Is there another way to lift the motor? Thanks for the help I'm just trying to avoid the cost of driving 60 miles back to the dealer and waiting a week to get my boat back. Thanks for the help.

Re: Changing motor height on Pro XS? (TritonKTB)

I don't see any "safe" way to lift a $15000 motor other than with the Merc lift ring. I believe mine was around forty bucks, but it's been a while. Definitely under $75, and any way you do that math, it's pretty much a no brainer.

And if you're talking about moving the motor higher on the jackplate, the mounting holes on your Merc motor are only 3/4 inches center to center.

TritonKTB, do you know what your measurements are below the pad? I'm at 2.25" below the pad and that gets me 5800 RPM @ 80+ mph with a stock 27' Trophy. I can measure my above the transom for you if it would help? It's 8.5" above the transom. I would guess you are way to low, I could slam a 27' Tempest to the limiter or real close to it.

How are you getting yours that high? What plate are you running? I re-measured and I'm at 5" above. I have never measured from the pad and I'm not sure how to. Any suggestions?

I'm running just a T&H manual 10" plate and I have the motor in the very bottom holes and the plate almost at the top, I could prolly go another 1" up. The link below should give you the idea of prop shaft to pad measuring. Most on here refer to there setup in this way, but with our combination of boat and motor being the same it shouldn't matter what way you measure it. Although ever boat performs different at different engine heights, yours may not like the same as mine. I had to be around 2.75" below the pad with the tempest to keep it hooked up good. The trophy gave me a better holeshot and 2-4 mph faster topend.

Based on the instructions you sent I'm approx 4 1/2" below the pad.
I'm in the 3rd hole down on the motor. Is your jack plate mounted on top of the piece of aluminum on top the transom or below it? I know I need to come up at least 2". If that ends up being to high I can always back the plate down. I just want to get it set up right so I will see the 250's full potential.

I do not know about what heights you need, but i think I read something that needs to be looked at.
I think you said your 2" spacers are between the plate and transom? The spacers need to be between the plate and the motor.

    Kevin:

Could you possibly post or email a picture of your jackplate, spacers and engine mounting?

Also... can you provide your engine serial number?

Thanks... this will help us to help you!

    I don't have a digital camera so I can't post pics.

I have the 2" spacer mounted to the transom and the jackplate mounted to the spacer. I called CMC this morning to confirm that everything is mounted correctly. They did confirm this is the way they recommend it being installed.
The jackplate has two holes 1" apart. My motor is mounted in the bottom. I can get 1" from raising the motor to the top hole. The bolts are in the 3rd hole down on the motor mount. I can get approx 3/4" by moving the motor to the 4th hole down.

Don, how much is a lifting eye for the 250 Pro XS?

Re: Changing motor height on Pro XS? (TritonKTB)

If I'm reading your post correctly, you have the spacers mounted "to the boat" and the jackplate "mounted to the spacers and the engine". Although this is not a "normal configuration", I also spoke with CMC, and they insist that you have it mounted in the correct order.

    (edited after speaking with CMC)

Start by taking the 1" you have in the spacers (or spacer to jackplate joint), as well as the 3/4" you have on the motor. You can always run up and down with the jackplate.

Lifting eye is: 91-90455 1 ($39.54... + 10% discount OR free shipping, whichever is
best deal for you.... shipping in this case).

Any specific reason why CMC does it this way?

Mounting the spacers between the transom and the jackplate reduces the stress applied to the jackplate itself.

My dealer mounted my 2 inch spacer between my CMC jackplate and my motor (also a 250 ProXS). Hmmmm.

But induces more stress on the transom. Which would you rather take a chance at having to repair, transom or jakeplate?

I have had CMC plates on smaller boats 18 1/2 footers with motors up to 175 hp and have had lots of wear problems. I would not hang my new 225 Pro XS off a CMC. I feel a Bob's is allot stronger and my spacers are between the plate and the motor.

How does this put more stress on the transom? The lever between the motor and the transome is the same length either way.

I have my 2" spacers between my cmc hydraulic and the motor.

Re: Changing motor height on Pro XS? (Roddy)

It's probably just becuase Tritons need tons of jack. Their transom holes are low compared to other manuf. That why you can only use a few manuf. jackplates. T&H is the only hydraulic plate I know if that works on Tritons extremely well.
