Gunners kill 257 wild hogs in Kansas

STULL -Aerial gunners from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shot and killed 257 wild hogs in Kansas over about the last four weeks, but experts say the troublesome swine will continue to wreak havoc in the state.

An estimated 2,000 feral hogs make Kansas home, while Missouri might have as many as 10,000. Nationally, feral swine are estimated to number 4 million and cause nearly $1 billion in damage.

The hogs are blamed for destroying field crops, ruining wetlands and potentially spreading disease to livestock. They also reproduce at rates far higher than most species of wildlife.

Although many hunters would like to go after the hogs, the state of Kansas has banned such hunting, hoping to take away the incentive for people to release the hogs into the wild. But landowners say they are still constantly asked by hunters for permission to hunt the hogs.

Brenna Wulfkuhle, who raises cattle near Stull, said the hog hunters "don't get it." Hunting hogs only spreads them across the landscape, she said.

"The hogs tear up our pasture," she said. "And if we ever found a hog with foot-and-mouth disease, there'll be a quarantine of everything around here."

It does sound stupid, but I do understand what they are trying to doing. By not allowing hunting of feral hog they think there won't be a market and people will quit bringing them into the state. The whole supply and demand thing.

And to think, I'm planning a trip to OK to shoot a hog when I could do it here if it were legal

Pun intended... This could easily be a cash cow for the state.

    Re: ferell hogs (tritonryan)

It's funny how Missouri and Kansas are so different in their thoughts on feral hogs...

Both sides agree they are creating a lot of damage, desease, etc. But Missouri actually promotes the shooting of any ferell hog, boar, pig loose that is not tagged. No permit needed, shoot and no questions asked. There is at least a one page article in the regulations that clearly allows the shooting of any hog, even if it is domesticated and running on the loose without a tag.

Kansas on the other hand, well we know the story...

I have hunted them in colorado and let me tell you this, they give you the most eerie feeling ever...but the state of kansas denies it all....BS...

There is also a breeding pair down by Sedan. I watched them for several days back in 1993 after I shot a big 12-pt.

    Re: ferell hogs (Wheels)

Sedan area and that area (Elk county especially) are loaded with cougars. As far as hunting them goes, you can shoot all you want as long as you don't talk about it and dispose of evidence (fire!!! ). You always hear rumors of KDWP following signals from electronic tags to a farmer's barn where a dead one was hanging. Better to be safe than sorry. I saw one this year in deer season that I took a couple pop shots in the trees at. Those suckers are fast .

I am sorry but that is F#$#ing stupid . They climb trees and move faster than any human. Why would you get within arrow range of them. I have seen one stand flat footed and jump over a two lane highway. Oh well to each his own. . It sends chills down my back to see em at 100 yards when I am holding a high power.

when you hunt them with an arrow, you are hiking at extreme elevations in 3 foot of snow and you only shoot them when they are treed...you dont hunt them on the ground, you let the dogs tree them...of course you have another weapon too

Funny you should say that about cougars. Try this one out. This is from Jeff Foxworthy or Larry the Cable guy can't remember which.

Anyways, guys go out and buy all this scent free clothing, deer call, rattles and doe in heat stuff. Then go to the stand and try and not make any noise at all and end up not getting anything.

I can drive down the road with my noisy truck, headlights on high beam, windows down blasting music and a deer will run out in front of me. Then when I honk he stops in his tracks and wham I kill it.

Why not just buy car horns and headlights to use for deer attractant?
