    Qustion for you all?

Do some of you deep crank in Early spring for pre-spawn fish?

Was watching a couple guys alter there presentations throughout day and was going shallow and deep....the deep pockets would get cranked and if no bites jump to shakeyhead/light jig on the slopes of the "pockets"......have you actually caught fish this way?

I have on occasion cranked main lake points in spring and slow rolled a spinner bait on the deep end of main lake points. Outside edges of grass were key to my success. It's always good to follow up a productive area with a finesse presentation like you mentioned. You can catch a couple of good ones with a crankbait and then throw a shakey worm in and catch one that wouldn't take the crank. Sounds like a pattern that worked well in FL. We would fish an area with Rat L Traps then go back through with Senkos.

Also, for me the staging fish always seem to be easier to catch than those already on the bed

That seemed like a Logical presentation for those 2.......but he was using a dd22 or dd16(or similar).......then going to a 3/16 oz head with a worm in that same area.......it just seemed that fishin at 20 feet+ you'd have a heavier jig then he was using to get it gown quick.......I know that it does me no good to qritique(sp) him cause he does what he does..............Maybe thats what got him the win.....doing smoething no one eolse was doing......but I was just wondering if anyone else has used the same thing that early in spring........I can understand using Traps and Senkos along with jigs.......but just found it unusual for the conditions they were in.

Granted I know they just had a cold front and high winds which basically shut down the shallow bite in the process....except a few....but didnt realize a Deep crank would be that effective

I'm not much of a deep cranker, but my rule of thumb is to use the absolute lightest head weight you can get by with for whatever depths (or wind conditions) you're fishing in. For instance on heavy rip rap or chunk rock, I will lighten the jighead to the point that I am gliding it over the tops of the rocks on bottom, rather than in them where you will snag constantly. This is as it relates to a finesse presentation. If I'm throwing something bigger, like a jig and pig on a baitcaster, the presentation would be completely different. I have used as light as 1/32 oz heads and trim them some if I need to. Wind causes me to upsize faster than fishing deeper does. Probably didn't answer your crankin' question, but for me to offer any advice on deep crankin' wouldn't be too smart because I suck at it.

I'll be the 1st to admit it too that I am not a Deep cranker.......not that I cant do it but seem to take a lot out of you doing so......probably dont have the right rod/reel combo for it either.....I had a nice 4.4 ratio reel for it on a 7' med rod that I though worked pretty good.........but to try and do that around here is pointless since most lakes I fish are not that deep......except Mozingo or Milford......but other than that its pretty tough pickins
