    It is official!

I have blown the motor on my '08 225 Etec HO. Only 174 hours on the motor! No warranty, it ran out in November of '10. Last year I had the lower unit go out (lightning) and had to pay to get the new magnum, the 225 wasn't covered in their replacement program. It looks like a new powerhead $9000 is what it is looking like. I loved the motor but I believe it will be last Evinrude. The dealership is helping me figure out the best option but I am just so pissed right now.... Hopefully BRP can help, they have a call into them but this just makes me sick to my stomach.

    Re: It is official! (meatballs9)

OK let's review. Your warranty ran out in November of 2010. You lost a lower unit in 2011 and it is Evinrudes fault how? Out of warranty is out of warranty. Now another year out of warranty and the you have a power head failure and you want Evinrude to pay for this powerhead?
So you are two years out of warranty and want a new powerhead for free? You may want to check on how the folks at Brunswick and Yamaha handle out of warranty claims.

Did warranty offer anything? Did your dealer go to bat for you? Think of it just like your vehicle, if it is out of warranty should they fix the problem for free?

check your state consumer laws.... maybe just maybe they are like ours..

products are suppose to last or expected to last a reasonable amount of time...
mind you that excludes poor /inappropriate usage.

a well kept... 174hr engine should not blow

find out the cause first- negociate politely after - then sue if you feel justified.

    Bad publicity does wonders sometimes.

    Re: (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

I dd not mean to start a war against BRP, like it was there fault. I am not blaming them or anything. Yes it is out of warranty and I am not expecting them to do anything nor am I begging them. The dealership is contacting them to see if there is anything they would like to do since it has low hours and that I had to replace the lower Lightning unit last year at my expense. Yes, BRP knows they had a problem with the lightning unit and they fixed it in the 250 models but chose not to in the 225 models. I don't agree with that decision but it was there's and it was a business decision. However, one would think that they may do something because of my problems. If they don't, they don't, it is out of warranty and I would respect that. However, if this would have happened to you, I am sure you would let the dealership talk to them on your behalf before you shelled out a lot of money before you got it fixed. Once I hear back from the dealership, I can figure out things and make a decision and move on and figure a way to get back on the water.

Instead of waiting for your dealer to call their tech support hotline, get your serial number and talk to the customer service reps at 262-884-5993 and ask if anything can be done on your behalf.

Knowing how Yamaha operates you must have been fishing a Yamaha sponsored event and visted the support trailer. I've been in this biz enough to know how things work.

Re: It is official! (Stroker Ace)

The whole warranty thing is a hard deal for some and great for others. These days they can pretty much tell you or know I should say how a motor has been run just bye the computer and other things they can see or notice when you take it in. For instance, oil, if your not running the factory oil they can see and tell that your not. I do believe that any of these outboard companys should have a minimum run time for the warranty within a reasonable amount of time. 174 hours is nothing and for the price of that motor I would be pretty mad myself even it was blown "say" 4 years after new and warranty was 3 years. I know you can buy extended ins., I know a guy who's motor blew with 3 months to go on the extended. My advice would be to talk with the factory yourself and if nothing positive comes out of it then ask for a demo motor. You could also find a used motor a lot cheaper. Hope you get it worked out.

well if it was not your fault...and nothing moves try small claims

it may generate a goodwill move just before going to court

you would do a lot of good to others with same issues (very low hours and bust)

bad publicity is like a plague. If plain logic in your efforts fail to get a solution plain old embarassement should move things along. Worst you can do is loose the case and small claims is cheap.

I had a bank charge me for 5 years for my gold card which I had cancelled. (I never noticed the annual charges mixed in others till one day I noticed the once a year charge)

They refused to reimburse me till I told them I was going public with the obvious bug in their gold card billing software.

I surely was not the only "victim" of their s/w glitch guess what ... I got 625$ back very quickly :-)

    Re: (Crosbyman)

Update: The dealer has told me that BRP will not do anything. I have not called BRP myself and I probably should. Just to let people know, that I don't make long runs and I don't run it wide open all the time and I always use the correct oil by BRP. I don't run the motor that much. The dealer has been great and we are working on some options but to tell you the truth, it just plain sucks and it stresses you out and makes you want to just give up the whole fishing thing.
