Boat question

Well I have been trying to figure out how to make a boat "float" with my budget.

I will be looking for one around June more than likely (I am expecting a raise and should be able to make the payments). I am going to be capped at about $10k. Might be able to do a little more but 15k is very much out of the picture. My question is what would you guys suggest I look at? I am not really partial to any brand but want the most boat for my budget. I would hope to upgrade in a year or 3 but this will get me my fix for now.

I will be fishing here in Kansas with the exception of a couple possible tournaments down south next semester and after that I will be done with the collegiate thing.

Also would I be better off to wait until next winter to buy?

I look forward to your suggestions.

i would just keep your eyes open and see what come up,, don't get in a hurry,,, we look for 3 years till we found this Old Cajun,, it was a really slick old boat,, this guy wouldn't even drive it on a gravel road.. it's not the newest, fastest, prettiest.. but it's mine, it's paid for , taxes and insurance are alot cheaper,, and you can catch fish out of it,, and i'm happy with it , so that's all that matters.... the Boat Payment is the cheap part of buying a boat ,, then you got taxes, tags , insurance , and up keep.. there's some nice boats out there .. you just got to look for them

That is why I posted. Thanks for the input. I have a hard time of being patient when it comes to toys. I am a bad impulse buyer . I will definitely just watch for deals. Never had a boat before other than two man scamps and jon boats. Looking forward to shopping.

    Re: Boat question (Jiggernaut)

What are you interested in? Big 20' with a 225? midrange 17' with a 115 or small 15' with a 90. Just depends on what you want. Some of the smaller boats you can get at a great price. Older boats can be good deals or very bad deals. My suggestion would be to go with someone who would be unbiased anytime you go looking at a boat. I bought my first boat without knowing much about boats. I know it's early but I might be selling mine at that time. If you are interested in some details IM me and I will tell you about it.

If you buy something this year in the <10K range, it will have enough years on it that it probably won't deprecicate much if at all in the next year. Fish it for a year and when your finances change next year, sell it and buy the next one. It will be easier on the budget when you take the money out of the one you sell and put it towards the more expensive boat instead of one big hit.

    Re: Boat question (Stein)

Look hard and long. There are alot of nice boats out their in that price range. Just be reminded that you need to make sure that the motor is in great shape. Ohterwise if it pops your looking at about half of that 10k in repairs... Have a compression check done and take an overall look at the boat and you can sometimes gauge how hard she was rode and whether whe was put away wet. Good luck. BE PATIENT!!!!!!
