    Any ideas?

I have a mid 60's 6hp 'rude, that I cannot get the shift linkage loosened, so that I
    can r&r the water pump.
I thought that the 3/8 bolt should have a slot in it, so I can loosen and tighten w/ a
    screwdriver.
On one of my previous motors that I did this, it had the slotted head.
This one doesn't, and I can't get a socket in there, even after I ground it down.
I also tried to get my die grinder in to make a slot, and that didn't work either.
    Thanks, Steve

maybe we could try reading rule 1 and then the mod team can go from there.

Been a long time since I've worked on one so I may be wrong. I think if you look at the left side of the midsection need the lower unit. You should see a plate on the side that has two screws, remove the plate and that will allow you access to the shift rod clamp. That is where you loosen it up.

Mine does not have that plate your talking about.
On another 6 hp I worked on, remove the 4 bolts between the lower unit and mid section, shift into reverse, pull real hard on shift lever, this forces the shift rod down a little farther than normal, and opens the gap so you can stick a screwdriver in and loosen the 3/8 bolt.
For some reason, this motor does not have a slotted head bolt. Just a 3/8 hex head, and a cannot get a socket in to loosen it, even after grinding the socket.
    Thanks.
