    Moving to Indianapolis

Looks like my work is moving me from St. Louis to Indianapolis very soon. I noticed most of the guys on this board are avid KY lake fans, so I will fit right in. My brother lives in Murray and I'm down that way pretty often.
My big question is where in the heck do I fish around Indianapolis that isn't a far drive? I know absolutely nothing about the area! I could use some serious help. I'm going to leave my boat back in STL but bring it up for a few weeks at a time if I can find some place decent to use it. Any advice to keep me from going crazy in Indy is going to be a great help! Thanks in advance.

    Re: Moving to Indianapolis (BigRed44)

Since I'm SW of Indy, I'm only familiar with the lakes in that direction.
Monroe would be less than an hour on a 4-lane from much of suburban Indy.
West Boggs 1:45 to 2 hours.
    Patoka 3? hours.
Kentucky Lake is probably 5.5hours depending on where you'd live. When/If I69 is completed it should cut some time off your trip to all those lakes.

Just make the drive to Barkley and KY every weekend. No need wasting time on the IN lakes.

    Just my opinion.

I thought Patoka took 5 fish limits of 20lbs or better pretty often. Thats not to bad for an Indiana lake. Ky lake is sweet though.

    Re: Moving to Indianapolis (BigRed44)

I moved to the Indianapolis area from Murray. I graduated college and got a job with Nucor Steel in Crawfordsville. And just let me tell ya.... fishing sucks up here!!! I fished KY and Barkley regularly while in college, sometimes 5 days a week. I have never been so "fishing depressed" in my life! However, to keep yourself sane Lake Waveland, Raccoon, Geist and Monroe are all decent. The main problem I have noticed up here is that the lakes are way undersized and WAY overfished. I have more fun walking up and down Sugar Creek (major creek in Montogomery and Parke Co that feeds into the Wabash River) catching smallmouth. I have caught several in the 4lb + range. Like some of the others have suggested.... On friday have your rig hooked up to the truck and loaded, hit I-70 west until it runs into 57 South then hop of 57 S onto I-24. The 5 1/2 hour trip is well worth it!!!!!

Re: Moving to Indianapolis (WIR3D 2 FISH)

Patoka is doing real well this year. Two guys were pushing 19# after day one of our Top 8 with big fish at 6.38. Monroe seems like it is on a down cycle right now but it will come back. Depending on your style of fishing Geist can be good and Freeman/Schafer can too.

    Re: Moving to Indianapolis (hardestyeric)

Thanks for all the info. I will be traveling back to the Missouri lakes quite a bit but it would be nice to have a little something close by. All these comments make this move look like a bad idea! I will definitely be looking for someone to go fishing and learn a few areas with once I'm there.

    Re: Moving to Indianapolis (BigRed44)

    Shafer/Freeman 1 1/2 hrs, Geist 20 minutes, West Boggs 2 hrs, Patoka 2 1/2 hrs, KY/Barkley 5 hrs. All times approximate.

There are plenty of small lakes around Indy within 1-2 hours, just not really too great fishing.

    Welcome to Indian-no-place!!!

I think its close. Consistently takes 12 to 15 to get a check and there is probably 3 tourneys a week there. Patoka may be better but geist is in the top three anyway

Re: Moving to Indianapolis (Zach G)

This is like the top three best looking girls at the meat packing plant, but here goes:

    #1 Patoka
    #2 Monroe
    #3 ???

We have to consider only lakes that can have 300 boats fishing tournaments on them and still put out lots of fish.

Zach...you're dreaming. Patoka, Monroe, Wawasee, Tippy, Maxinkuckee, Racoon, James, Barbee Chain, Dewart, Chapman, Salamonie, and many more are way better than Geist. In the summer...you can hardly find any stretch of water on Geist that doesn't have a boat in it.

    Re: Moving to Indianapolis (billius)

It took 12 to win on Tuesday and then dropped down to 8 for 2nd.........

    1 - Patoka - typically over 20 to win
    2 - Monroe - typically over 20 to win
3 - West Boggs - small lake but with 16 + pounds you still will not get a check at times
    4 - Lemon - same as above

And the only reason Patoka and Monroe are ahead of the other two is due to size of lake.

Heck - I rather fish the Ohio if it was closer

    Re: Moving to Indianapolis (Lucky1)

I guess once I move there you can add at least a pound to all those first place weights
1996 Gambler 209 GE. 2007 Mercury Optimax 225.. Sitting on a modified 2015 Ranger Trailer. Ultrex TM, twin power poles. 4 Helix G4N graphs with Mega Live and Mega 360, NextGen Lithium batteries with stealth charging system. Like the Frankenstein of old boats!
