    Eureka flats

New to Ky Lake, still finding my way around. Where are the Eureka Flats? Will the White Bass still be active there at this time of year? Bass fishing has been slow for me and I want to get my 14 year old into some steady action to fuel the fire for fishing.

When you come through the canal, is it on the East side of Barkley? I assume run the channel and then go in slow due to shallow water? Any consistent White Bass action taking place?

I'm guessing that nothing is too consistent right now with the shad spread out. With the cool nights this week things should start really heating up in the backs of the bays.

Eureka Landing is adjacent to Eureka Flats. Eureka Landing is the old marina against Barkley Dam on the east side - was destroyed by a storm and never rebuilt. The secondary channel crossing to it runs right through the old spoil piles/sunken islands/road bed - usually that's where you'll find the jumps, but more times than not I've found them closer to the main river channel where they herd the shad up the drop and onto the flat and then pounce on them.

I haven't gone after them in some time on Barkley, but it used to be that the bite/jumps started in July, peaked in August, and then dwindled down in September...you might be a little late. Two other decent places to fish for whites are the Ashland oil terminal where the main channel bends and has a 10' deep flat adjacent to it (heck of a catfish spot too!), and then the island with the willow trees on it along the main channel out in front of Buzzard Rock. The willow tree island is also pretty decent for schooling bass and even smallmouth when the current is running around it. I even duck hunt off that island from time to time.

Now on KY Lake, finding whites is pretty easy - just find the grass beds and fish the edge with white grubs when you see them schooling up. I found schooling action regularly last year in July and loaded the boat a few times. This year has been a little tougher since the grass hasn't been quite as thick. I've done better on the yellows this year than the whites, and they taste about the same.

+1,,,,,,,,,There are a lot of old concrete foundations out there with one inch of water on them,,,,,,,,,be very carefull. There is a creek that ziz zags threw the flats, very hard to follow if you don't know where it is. The best white bass fishing will be next to the deep water before you get on the flats very close to the main river.

    Re: Eureka flats (artcarney_agr)

Growing up in the late 60's, I had buddy who lived on Clough Lake Dr. From his house you could see the willow island. We considered that island ours, camped on, planted rye and winter wheat for the geese, built blinds, sunk brush piles etc. We hated the thought of anyone hunting or fishing our domain, especially if they were from some seemingly far off place like Louisville or Evansville. That was a grand area for teenagers who liked to hunt and fish, especially the LBL side.

There are (were) a number of good white bass spots between the island and the big house.
