    Need Advice (Any roofers)

I had a brand new Timber Line roof put on 14 months ago, they are 30 year shingles and suppose to be 80 mph shingles. I had about six blow off two months ago and now they are tore up again. Shouldn't those singles be sealed down good by now after going the entire summer. Could i have some bad shingles, any body ever had that happen? I bought the best you can get and hoped i would not have any problems for a while

Im not a roofer but I am a gc... no matter what you buy it still comes down to the installation.. if you buy the best and it is not put down right it is only worth as much as the bad install.. with that said. even if it has been installed right under certain conditions it could be damaged.. in 14 mths the shingle has had enough time to set up so that is not the issue.. sounds to me like you may have a claim on your hands with your h.o. insurance.. or call the guy that did the install.. if he is a stand up guy he may come out and fix at no charge... long story short.. it would be harder for you to try to turn in a claim with the shingle manufacturer than to just get it fixed on your own... if they find even one shingle not installed to there specs it voids the roof warrantee from them... check the nailing pattern on the shingles... you can get the specs off the web sight for the shingle manufacturer.. if they were not nailed down right you will know right away what your problem is.. start there and if you have any more questions email me at devriesenterprieseinc@comcast.net.. if I don't have the answer I will know who does... I have many reps at my beck and call... good luck. PS yes there are some times when bad shingles are made but most of the time it is a color matching thing and not so much the structure or ability for them to seal down//

Rodney no roofer either, but I can tell you what I was told when we had shingles blown off our place.
All shingles that I am aware of have a tar strip on the end covered with some kind of paper. Most roofers will not take the time to peel that off, so the shingles will not seal, hence they where installed wrong.
Like stated above your best bet is your home owners insurance.
Why we spent a shit load of money and put a metal roof on ours.

Man, I keep seeing more and more metal roofs! Must be the growing trend now.

All my shingles are glued down on the end- can't tell if it is an adhesive strip, or if it is where the roofer placed sealant/caulk. Either way, they don't flip up in the wind at all.

Sounds like you got the shaft by the installer....

    Rodney,

I run a roofing crew my day off from the firehouse..Like the other guys told you, getting Timberline to cover them is a chore, I install a ton of those each year. Our tourneys start in a couple weeks, I would be glad to come by and take a look at it for you and if its just a handful of shingles can fix it for you for free...Or swap you for a jug o oil or somethin...And, my barn burnt the other day with my boat in it so I will be lookin for another boat soon...Talked to Auten the other day but I am looking...Jeff

You are not supposed to tear the plastic strips off that is not the problem. You just had some that did not seal. Could be many reasons, they were too tight and had a slight buckle, could be a bad sealing strip out of the package. Get someone to replace the missing shingles and be done with it. Even if they did seal in the summer it does not take quit as much wind in the winter to break a tab loose because it is so cold there is no elasticity to the sealant. I did a roof with 110 mph dimensionals and in that last wind storm I lost 8 or 10 at tthe eave on a house. I am just going to repair it for the homeowner, warranty is so tough on wind damage to get covered. BTW roofing is my business.

    Re: Need Advice (thfdman)

Thanks guys and thanks for the offer Jeff but a good friend of mine came by today and looked it over for me. He could not find any thing out of place as far as the job the roofers did. I live in a wide open area and get a lot of wind so he just replaced the bad ones on my house and used some extra sealer to seal them down. My boat garage will have to wait until i have time to fix those i guess. I really appreciate all the advice though,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,THANKS.

If any of you ever need a boat let me know and i will not a square of shingles off the price
