    Motor Guide Switch

This weekend my trolling motor was acting up. The switch would not engage unless a lot of pressure was put on it. I took the swtich off to see what was going on. The switch itself is fine but has a rubber gramet on the tip of it that allows the foot pedal to engae is worn out or just fell off.

Do I need to buy a whole new switch or can I find that rubber piece somewhere?

Here is what it looks like.

You can buy just the rubber pieces. Mine did that a couple of years ago and I keep spares in the boat now.

In a pinch a piece of the tube or Paca craw will work!

Have to be careful using shims to engage the button, I burnt up a relay doing that once because the shim I put in there was a bit big. Let me tell you, when a relay fails and provides an infinite current loop b/w the TM and the battery in the rear....it is NOT a pretty scene.

I'm not saying to use them as a shim. Use them as a replacement. The ends of tubes and the paca craws have solid ends and will fit over the metal button and act the same as the rubber stopper. They work fine and never had any problems. Once actually forgot I had to do it one time on the water and used a paca craw tail for a couple of months.

I called B & J and they are $4.50 each. Beats replacing the switch for $18.99.

I usually just replace the whole switch. It's been a while since I've bought one but I think they're only around $15. Takes all of 5 minutes to replace them.

Just Add Water Marine on Dixie Hwy has the rubber pieces for $1.00 each. B&J is high on everything.
