Laurel Lake has been called the "Dead Sea" by all who have fished it at sometime. Well their has been a resurection of the sorts if that were the case. Pittsburg Marine hostd the 2008 Laurel Lake Open, Saturaday, March 29th , sponsored by Ranger Boats & Yamaha Outboards. When the weigh-in started the slug fest was on! The first big bag was brought in by the team of Todd Boggs & Todd McKnight with a 5 fish limit of 23.84 lbs, anchored with a 5.98 lb Smallmouth. That would be short lived with a 27.13 lb limit caught by the team Johnny & Greg White, anchored with a 6.96 lb Smallmouth! When the dust cleared their was 5 differenct teams with over 20 lb bags, equaling 115.86 lbs! Out of a 88 boat field, 45 teams made their way to the scales with a total weight of 545.17 lbs. There were 8 Smallmouth that were checked for big fish and 2 Largemouth checked that all exceeded 5 lbs, with 2 of those being over 6 lb Smallmouth. Hats off to all the fishermen, there was not a dead fish brought to the scales. The tournament paid back 22 places with the team of Gerald Lewis & Phil Ransom finishing with 11.66 lbs, anchored by a 5.92 lb Smallmouth for 22nd place. The top 5 teams were: 1st place Johnny & Greg White with 27.13 lbs and Big Fish of the day - a 6.96 lb Smallmouth, 2nd place Todd Boggs & Todd McKnight with 23.84 lbs, 3rd place James Miracle & Kevin Gregory with 21.89 lbs, 4th place Donald Shupe & Barry Stopher with 21.80 lbs, and 5th place going to the team of Samuel & Jim Smith with 21.20 lbs. No one reported what the fish were caught on, as they are trying to keep it quiet. Thanks to all the fishermen for a job well done!!
Upcoming tournaments on Laurel are on April 26th the BFL Mountain Division, May 3rd Pittsburg Marine Tournament Trail and May 18th the Kentucky Bass Federation will visit. The "Dead Sea" has become a real "Honey Hole"!
