    Oil slick on Dale Hollow???

I was fishing today back in a creek and smelled what seemed to be crude oil. I noticed an oily substance on the surface of the water. Seemed to be coming up from the bottom. This isn't the first time nor the only place I've noticed it. Anybody else seen it or know what it's from?

Re: Oil slick on Dale Hollow??? (Daniel)

Daniel when I was down there about two weeks before the rally, I was way up in a creek just north of Cedar Hill resort and saw the same thing. It smelled like fuel oil to me and was all over the surface of the water for about a mile I would guess. I said something to the guy who ran the resort...he said he'd never heard of such a thing...go figure.

I know exactly where you are talking about Daniel, that smell was there last year as well as this year, would be very nice to find out where it is coming from and get it cleaned up!

You got me, I know what your talking about. I remember one particular situation last summer there was a bad oil spill (I think up Ilwill (sp?)) and they had to use the sheets to clean it up.

There is a spot on Cumberland where there is a natural oil spring under the lake. When it is calm you can see it and smell it.

I've been told before that there is oil in all that shale rock down there but that it costs to much to try to extract it. Who knows if that is true, but when we go camping down there I know that shale rock pops and explodes everywhere if you throw it in a campfire. A older fella told me several years ago that the rock did that because of the oil in it??? Who knows...not me.

This might be part of the answer:

    <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">
Willow Grove was said to be rich in minerals, especially oil. Oil wells were plentiful in the area around Willow Grove. About seventeen wells were found in 1925 at Willow Grove. One well on Will Hay’s farm was pumping two hundred barrels daily.

Willow Grove was a town just like any other town. It had its sights set for the future. The people of Willow Grove had hoped that they would live and die in Willow Grove.
    </TD></TR></TABLE>

Kind of a sad story because the families who lived in this area had to just up and move. They had no idea how to fight the government and forced to move out of their homes. They even had to dig up family members and move them to another grave site.

Oil is an interesting substance because it just takes very little to cover a big area. They do make buoys and sheets of paper that you lay on top of the water and pulls just the oil off the surface. We had a lot of these on the rescue fire trucks for car spills in creeks and ponds.

The one that I am talking about is on the main lake it is near otter though. I did see some oil in otter once or twice though.

Triton if you are on the main lake oil slick we always thought it was funny pulling fish out of an area that had oil all over.

I think we're talking about the same place. It's on the right as you enter Otter were Beaver and Otter split. It does seem strange. Guess the fish don't mind.

The one in otter is well known to locals that is what we call that bank the oil slick. At times is is very thick on the water!!! Excellent bank for smallies and kys!!!
