    2005 johnson 175 LU question

    model # J175GLSOB
    serial#05089435

This weekend i noticed oil coming from the water intake ports on the lower unit.I tried to remove the bottom drain plug and it wouldn't come out so i removed the top fill plug and the oil is milky white and full of tiny metal shavings that look like glitter, not chunks though. It still shifts fine, there is no grinding and functions ok but i'm looking for an idea of what i may have ground up thats taken out the seal?

This is an aftermarket lower unit that i had put on in april of 2009 and had the prop shaft seal replaced on in may of this year for a leak. The original LU had a "catastrophic failure" and pretty much exploded in march of 09.Thanks in advance for any replies.

Yep pull the hitch pin from the silver bar that runs under the bottom carbs. Slide it to the left and that will free the shift pin from the rod. Motor needs to be in forward and if needed the linkage bar from the rear linkage (plastic) to the front remove the cotter pin or hair pin or the upper part of the linkage to give more forward travel. Your prop should be removed to inspect the prop shaft for fishing line that may have cut the seals on the RBC.

Thanks fred,it slid right out once the shift rod pin was removed. There wasn't any fishing line or anything else wrapped around the prop shaft.Guess i'll take it to the local mechanic and let him open it up and see what broke inside.Thats a job i don't want to tackle but at least i saved a few bucks getting the LU off, thanks again.

If you have warranty on the LU contact them and off it goes. They whoever it is will make it right. If it is an SEI LU no problem it is back in two weeks, usually less with the failure analysis.
