    Question about Motor in Ohio?

I posted this message in the lounge, and i'll post it here too. As you know I live in Ohio, and I purchased a boat from a friend. He bought the motor in Tenessee and had it put on the boat there. When he sold me the boat. All he sold me was the boat and not the motor. Do I have to have the motor titled in ohio?

Every state is different when it comes to the boat, the motor, and the trailer. Only if it is over 10 horse power does it have to be titled in Ohio. The trailer does not have to be titled and the boat does. If Tennessee doesn't require a title for the motor all you need is a bill of sale for it and you can get a Ohio title. I bought my boat in Florida and had to go through this.

Dave is correct about the motor needing a title. I think it was Hern Marine on Rt4 that used to handle renewals and such. You might want to call them and ask for the licensing department.

I thought you needed a title for an Ohio trailer in order to get a Ohio license plate?

I know all the previous boats I had the trailers which had titles.

The motor does need a title in OH and can be obtained via bill of sale.

The trailer just needs to be weighed on certified scales to get plates. You can do this at a local gravel pit or such and they will give you a yellow weigh slip. I think it costs $10, take this to th DMV with the serial numbers and you can register the trailer. Note: when you weigh the trailer, if the boat is on it make sure to have the weigh master subtract the weight if the boat, motor, batteries, gas, trolling motor, etc... That weigh slip classifies the trailer by weight. I don't think it costs more, but there might be different laws that apply to a heavier trailer.
