Motor: j150plees. Will a lightning gear case fit this motor, and if it will, what changes would need to be made if any? Such as will I need to change the shift rod or anything else?Or would it be considered too much trouble to even try?

Yep it will fit go to http://www.shop.evinrude.com and compare the two you will have to look at a 99-01 Johnson 225 HPL model. More than likely shift rod and drive shaft.
This is the same gearcase as the standard V-6, they will all interchange. The only thing to watch for is proper length of the upper shaft and the correct design shift rod. Remember, the 60 degree motors have different length upper shafts than the 90 degree ones.![]()
Was this motor factory built with a lightning gear case? Or is this just another standard gear case? This is actually going to be an insurance repair and I am trying to get some more speed out of my rig. How much extra speed would I gain over the standard gearcase? My main concern is that I am hoping to obtain a low water pickup, by switching to the lightning gear case, if the lightning lu has a low water pick up. Thanks in advance for all ya'lls replies.

Ok, judging by the part#'s the 225 hpl upper driveshaft part# is 0436232 and the shift rod is 0329864. The j150plees upper driveshaft part# is 0436234 and the shift rod is 0335509. So would I end up installing the upper driveshaft and shift rod for a j150plees in the 225hpl gearcase, to make this work? Are both gearcases 20" long? As far as durability is concerned, am I wasting my time? I would love the extra speed but I don't want to go to this trouble if its not going to be worth it, speed gain wise, vs cost.
Yep you'll have to move both over. As far as performance gains maybe 2-3 MPH I wouldn't expect a massive gain.
Yes, Yes, and Yes The only difference in the lightning housing is a protruding bullet and curved skeg. The water intakes are lower allowing you to raise the engine perhaps a little higher but the same thing can be accomplished with a standard housing. In most cases, you can raise a standard housing as high as the boat will allow (Before cavitation occurs) And if you are in the 80 M.P.H. and higher range, you can always go to a low water pickup kit to assure good water pressure at extreme heights. The internals of a lightning case are the same as a standard case, so there is no more durability, one over the other.

What Kit and it is available for the L2 250 HO

Or you could just put a low water pick up on your current lower unit. ie, Bobs nose cone. But, I like to flare those water inlets a bit so they don't create a low pressure issue at full trim. But that's just me!![]()
Wow!! You guys are really knowledgeable!! So I can buy a kit from "Bob"? Where do I get this "bobs nose cone kit"? I have never heard or installed one of these.
A company in Florida takes your case and installs it for I think @ 500.00, repaints and sends back to you. Or, they can sell you a kit that you can do all the work yourself. I don't know if they have anything to work with the lightning housing or not, as I haven't worked with them in a few years. I have their phone number here somewhere if someone else does'nt chime in, I'll try to post it for you.![]()
I was under the impression that the L2 could not be coned.....or so I've been told.
Bob's can do a nosecone/lwp on a Lightning case. I would also get them to add their torque tamer while they have the case.
