    What happened? 1996 JOhnson 200HP

    1995 Johnson Venom 200Hp J200STLEOA

Motor was running great yesterday till we were heading in. I let off of the throttle to come off plane and then motor shuts off. Tried to start it back up but it would just crank and would not even try to fire. I checked the kill switch and it was still attached. Figured Fuel or spark. Was able to briefly check over the motor when got back home. It is getting fuel but I have no spark. Where do I start? What would happen all of a sudden like that to shut the motor off. Should I start with the kill switch or what?

Check compression then check spark. Disconnect the plug wires and insert a plug in to one wire at a time with it grounded to the motor then crank it.

Compression is good in all 6 cylinders 100-110. No spark at any wires. I unhooked the black and yellow wire and tried again for spark and none, from my understanding that is for the kill switch?

Check all electrical connectors and/or wires involved in the ignition system. Make sure a wire didn't get pinched and/or cut.

Check the ignition switch for broken wires. If those are OK then carefully remove the power pack from the motor and check those wires. Let it lean back and connect the power pack ground wire to the stand off and tighten the nut. See if it fires.

Make sure that the #1 piston is at TDC and the timing pointer is at 0 on the flywheel. You may have sheared the woodruff key or lost a stator. Look under the flywheel at the stator coils for burning and the top of the motor for melted insulation.

Everything looks good under the fly wheel, nothing melted or dripping. Not sure about the number 1 piston being at TDC or the timing pointer at 0? I don't quite understand that? doesn't the fly wheel stop in a different spot every time you crank it over? forgive me if this is a dumb question, I have no experience with the fly wheel.

The firing order on the motor is 1,2,3,4,5,6. Top right cylinder is #1. the flywheel is indexed with the pointer being at TDC on #1. So if the top of the piston #1 isn't at the TDC mark the key may have sheared and the flywheel may have rotated from the proper index location.

That stuff all looks fine. I ran some more checks last night from the manual ( what I felt comfortable with) and I am stuck. I am throwing in the towel and taking it in. I usually have good patience but apparently they are running low.

Don't give up just yet, two more things to try, disconnect BOTH black/yellow wires from the pack and see if spark returns. If not disconnect the yellow wires to the rectifier and see if spark returns.

I tried both of those and still nothing. I worked on her about 2 more hours last night and according to the manual the other things to test I need a different meter.

    update

Talked to the shop today. Power pack is bad, also the timer ring appears to have been previously glued in and came loose. They are waiting to pull out some boats in their storage that have the same motor so they can index the ring so they can glue it back in. Once that is done they can finish her up.

If you wish to speed the process up, you can down load the CDI troubleshooting manual. It has a diagram on the timing collar orientation for your motor.
