Motor won't run...everything I have done to this point

Okay guys....I am going to tell you the whole story, everything I have done and what it is doing.
    # 1 - bought boat took it to the lake....ran fine....had a little rough idle and a little surging at WOT.
    # 2 - Memorial Day - took boat to the lake....still little rough idle still little surging at WOT....went to start motor after fishing would not plane boat off....would plane boat if pushed in choke.
    # 3 - Ran seafoam in 12 gallons of gas....no better....same problem
    # 4 - Had carborators cleaned and reinstalled.....
    # 5 - Changed voltage regulator (Brand New) and flywheel...
    # 6 - Bought a parts motor...
    # 7 - Took boat to the lake.....same problem except worse...would not idle...and would not open up to plane boat off...it will rev up to 4,000 or more RPMs in neutral.
    # 8 - Came home....changed carborators....installed carbs from parts motor...back to the lake.....no better....same problem
    # 9 - Thought maybe plugs were bad and the gas was mixed to rich....replaced plugs...added 2 gallons of gas to make it leaner....went back to the lake.....same problem....no better
*****This is everything I have done to this boat motor...>I am at wits end...I do have a compression gauge coming in order to check compression. I have 2 options here.....try to find someone who can help solve this without breaking me up or save my money and try to buy a different motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. This might be helpful.....the last time I had it on the water today.....if you put the motor in reverse it would rev up and open up and almost pull the back of the boat under water. Why will this motor throttle up in reverse and not forward?
Thanks in advance and appreciate the help.

first things first, buy a genuine manual for your motor and start doing some basic troubleshooting, pulling things to bits in hope, is a sure way to end up with 20 new faults, you have played with everytrhing from carbs to electrical without any step by step troubleshooting to see what the problem is, reving in neutral means absolutely nothing and should be avoided..

Knowing the make, model, and year would go a long way to help us help you.

Agree, reading through all the steps taken I keep asking "why is he doing that"?

The whole story is incomplete without basic info first.
At least give the Yr, Hp and model number.

Re: Motor won't run...everything I have done to this point (hulapopr)

Sorry guys, like hulapopr said, its a 1986 Johnson GT 150 ( model J150STLCDC). I'm just so frustrated I forgot to put that in the thread. I have tried to locate a manual just for my motor with no success. I don't know what else to do with it. I feel its something simple but at the same time I feel its going to cost alot of money.I found a 1993 Johnson 150 Faststrike for $1500.00, maybe thats the way I should go.

the last time I went to the lake the the motor started missing if I held down the throttle to keep it running. I have no timing light to check with. IM not working.

    baker1,
I changed the regulator because mine was burnt up and the flywheel because 3 magnets came loose, I just listed them to show everything that I have done. Thought maybe something I did could have had something to do with what is wrong with it.

If it checks out OK by a trained tech, that is a much better option.

Is the timing advancing with the throttle? That is what my 85 xp 150 is doing. Just a shot in the dark as I am not a mechanic.
    Best of luck!

Re: Motor won't run...everything I have done to this point (bhougham)

Update: Just checked the firing on the motor. Had two plugs not firing. Checked all coils they are good. Checked power packs they are good. That means it has to be in the stator. 1986 Johnson GT 150 (J150STLCDC)

Another update: Think I found, called a OMC mechanic and told him about my firing problem and he said it was the timer base.

I ended up putting them all on mine, because one lead to another and eventually they all were bad. Good luck!

Firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6 Mark the flywheel and set the light to the setting in the manual. Connect the light to each wire and shoot the wheel. Timer base is a very good possibility. Think I may have mentioned that a long time ago.

Ok here it is. The timer base was bad. Got a timer base and still does the same thing. Wont idle or take off. Smothers out and dies. I am done with it. Ive done everything short of rebuilding it. The voltage regulator I bought new did not have the purple wire on it. Would that have anything to do with it.

I love working on these old motors, but man I've either changed or checked every electrial part on this motor. Doing a compression check this evening . I think it might have a bad piston or two.
