How do you get play out of hitch?

My trailer hitch has so much slop in it everytime I stop, start, or turn I feel the hitch shift and bang. I used a wood shim before but that was temporary. What is everyones fix on this? I can take the hitch when nothing is on it and move it a good half inch in either direction. I know they have the new hitches with the rubber in it but I don't want to buy a new one

That's a lot of play. Do you have the right size pin? They are normally 5/8". If so you might try drilling out to next bigger size.

You can put an anti-rattle bracket on the hitch for about $25.00.

Or you can drill a hole in the bottom of the reciever, tap it, then screw a bolt through the reciever and against the hitch.

Or if you never change the hitch you can weld it in.

Had the same problem, ran a bead of weld on each corner and filed it down till it fit snug.

I buy some velcro strips, about 25 cents, and place them inside the female end. Then I usually need a hammer to help put the ball hitch in. No more problem. Works every time and will last as long as you keep your vehicle.

Tried that several times, kept pulling thru the threads. Welded a 1/2" thick piece of steel inside the insert and threaded that....bolt snapped off.

Now thinking about buying one of them $100 inserts that tightens itself in the reciever

On my last truck the slop was worse so I went to Home Depot and bought some thin aluminum stock, cut it to length and worked great.
This "new"truck has less slop so the wood shim works good.
