    axle location

Does anyone have any idea how far from the back of the trailer should the axle be? example: 3foot 4 foot? I have a boat and trailer the my dad moved the axle back about 8 inches and I think he may have moved it too far back. I did a calculation according to ezloader and it said the axle should be 4feet from the back of the trailer, not sure this is right.

It's all about tongue weight... Total the weight of the whole package and keep 10% of the weight on the ball using a bathroom scale on plywood etc.

I've found 2 ways of finding axle placement. One is by length which would be 60% of trailer length in front of the axle centerline and 40% rear. I'm really not a fan of that thinking.

I like the formula of 5-7% of total trailer weight (empty) should be your tongue weight. I've found that works real well especially when towing empty. Keeps a little tongue weight so the trailer isnt all over the place. Then when its loaded you naturally have extra weight ahead of the axle centerline and it trailers nicely as well.
If it doesnt have wheels, swim, or run naked in the woods, I don\'t know anything about it.
