Stainless Steel Bolts vs. Galvanized Steel Bolts

Went to the hardward store to buy stainless steel lag bolts to rebunk my trailer. The Stainless Steel ones I need are $1.59 per bolt. I need 30 bolts all together to do all the bunk brackets. That's almost $50 for hardware. I noticed galvanized is somewhat cheaper. How much of a drop in corrosion resistence am I looking at if I use galvanized bolts ?? Any imput will be greatly appreciated before I spend my money. I don't mind spending the money if they (stainless) will preform that much better.

I purchased some with a neighbor at boltdepo.com We went with stainless, the orginal galvanize looked bad after a couple years in the salt treated bunks. With a washer they were around 50 to 60 cents apiece. Ofcourse the shipping was 6 or 7 dollars. When I get home I can look at the bill for exact information if you want me to.

Thanks for the info. I took the plunge and bought them today on my way home from work. My project is underway already and really didn't want to order on-line and wait for them to arrive. I probably would have saved about 20 bucks with that website . Oh well - at least I know I will be doing my trailer the right way and not cutting corners.

Don't use a stainless nut on a stainless bolt...you will never get it off, and may not even get it all the way on.

    use bronze nuts

Use a Antiseize Lubricate on the threads and you won't have a problem with stainless bolt and the nuts seizing on the threads.

Lag bolt is really a lag screw. They have a bolt head with a screw body. No need for a nut. Screws into the wood bunk.

when you use galv with treated, it has a real fast reaction. S/S is a better way to go.
