    Drilling hubs for studs question?.......

I have an '89 Bumble Bee and the trailer has bolts that hold the wheels on instead of studs and lugnuts. I'm getting ready to put on some aftermarket wheels and I need to change to the studs.

Can you drill the holes that's already in the hubs and install the studs?

Wheel studs have a grooved shoulder on them where they fit through the hub. Hubs designed to accept studs have corresponding grooves.

You might be able to drill your hubs and press the stud in the hole but if (when) the lug / stud gets rusty and or corroded and then you try and remove the lug nut the wheel stud may spin in the hub. No fun getting the lug off then.

I'd buy new hubs. They're pretty reasonable.

You're right, I knew the studs did but I forgot all about the holes having grooves in them.

Never seen a hub with grooves in the stud hole. Every one I have seen or installed, the hole in the hub was slightly smaller than the knurl on the stud, so when you drive the newsstud in, it is an interference fit (and yes, it does make it's own grooves in the hub when you drive it in).

That's what keeps the stud from spinning.

Now, if you remove a stud, it will look like there are grooves in the hole, and you may or may not be able to use a stud with the same knurl size. You may also have to get a ,005" bigger knurl.
