How tight should the lug nuts be?

I worked at a marina years ago during college (1991-1994) and we were always instructed to only hand tighten the lug nuts on boat trailers. This was due to the lugs bolts being made of a softer material than those found on cars. Is this still true today? I want to have my trailer tires balanced and I'm not sure if I should tell the mechanic to hand tighten the lugs or go ahead and use an air tool on them.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

My trailer has a sticker that says 95 Ft/Lbs.

But don't air wrench them. Hand tighten then, use a torque wrench.
