    Best water proof electrical connector

I have my new LED's for my trailer and need to splice them into the exsisting wiring harness. I would like to make the connection 100% COMPLETELY waterproof. I'll be soldering the wire connections. Is that liquid electrical tape stuff any good? Any other recommendations?

You could use waterproof shrink tubing. I have used the liquid electrical tape and it works ok.

I have some shrink tubing but it's not waterproof. Do they make some that is and do you know where I can get some?

Use Plumber's Goop available at most hardware stores. After you make connection put on latex gloves smooth over a thin skin lasts for ever.

The absolute best wp splice would be to use a crimp connector and an epoxy mold. Also, An uninsulated crimp connector and a couple of layers of linerless splicing tape the a couple of layers of super 33(3m electrical tape) just use the rubber tape like shrink wrap, then use the 33.

I think soldered connections are the best way to go. I place heat shrink on the wire slid back from the connection. I make the solder connection so that is smooth. Then apply liquid tape over the connection and on to the insulation of the wire both sides. Once it is dry slide the heat shrink over the connection and then apply heat to shrink the heat shrink tight.

There are some that are waterproof. It has something on the inside that oozes out when it is heated up to shrink the tubing. I get it at a local Marine shop, but I know that some automotive parts stores carry it also.

I'll look for the waterproof heat shrink and probably put the liquid tape under it. I am definately soldering the connections though. Thanks for the input guys.

I guess it would depend onhow you solder it. As a retired Navy electrician with the motor rewind NEC (same as Army MOS) I think I can handle that part of it.

Well, in that case...I was just thinking about a hobbyist with a 10 dollar ace hardware solder gun.

Cool, what kind of motors did you work on? Motor controls and troubleshooting are really my specialty. Construction is fine, but Im more of an industrial guy myself.

We rewound AC motors up to 75HP. My area of expertise was actually in the rotor balancing and noise and vibration analysis shop. I liked overhauling motor controllers as well. Most of our controllers were Cutler-Hammer. Real easy to work on. These were all pre-PLC controllers.

Awesome, relay logic is my favorite type to troubleshoot or even build new. There arent many old fashioned control men around anymore, most of them carry laptops and lattes. I came up under my dad who is the best control man I have ever known, The old cutler gear was some good stuff, alot of the newer is going to Allen Bradley, and ABB and such, but I still like opening an old starter cabinet and seeing an old monster cutler in the can.

Electronics always kicked my butt. Don't know why, just could never get my head wrapped around it.

Motor building is something I would love to learn, Dad can do everything but a rewind. We use a local motorshop for most of that. I have watched those guys go through some of the process. Its pretty neat stuff.

You are correct in soldering the connections, but remember that the purpose of soldering is a good electrical connection, not mechanical.
Go to a local electrical supply house and ask for some shrink tubing with silicone in it. When you heat the shrink, the silicon melts, runs and seals both ends completely waterproof. very easy to do and very effective.
