2" Ball - Chrome worn off

I have a Skeeter SL210 w/EZ Loader tandem axle trailer that I tow with my 05 Silverado 1/2 ton 4WD. I keep the ball greased up, but noticed that the chrome finish on the top 1/2 of the ball is worn off. I have pulled the trailer approximately 10k miles in the last 14 months since new. Is this normal? If not, what is the problem? I use a 4" drop, and the trailer looks level when hitched to the truck.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

My chrome is worn off also, and I follow the same procedures you do. I usually replace my ball in the fall when I'm not towing as much, but it's just to have a pretty chrome ball, not for function.

    You're ok, tow on.

I have an old split tennis ball that I slip over the ball when not trailering. Don't have to waste money to buy a new pretty ball every years cause it's hidden under the tennis ball.

I got a stainless steel ball and it seems to be holding up a lot better than the chrome one I had B4. Still put grease on it though.

What kind of grease do you use? It was recommended to me to use a silicone grease. Guess I couldn't use a tennis ball as that seems like it would rub the grease off.

Stainless steel is softer than regular steel and in most cases will bend before it breaks.

As evidenced by how easy it is to drill through stainless? Huh?

Chrome isn't made to wear just look pretty. Stainless holds shine longer and is stronger than mild steel.
I've never had much luck bending stainless steel.

You got that opposite, stainless is harder than mild or carbon steel

I suppose thats the reason most match grade rifle barrels are stainless also.

Grease covers up the chrome, dont worry about it.
