Motor turns to the right while towing boat on the trailer

    Hi Everyone.

I'm new to the forum and was hoping someone could help me out. My boat motor (yamaha F225) keeps turning to the right while I'm towing my boat to the lake. I have hydraulic steering and figured this shouldn't be happening unless something is wrong. My last bassboat also had hydraulic steering and this never happened. I've broken two motor toters because the motor tries to turn against the toter fork and breaks it off. I can't seem to find any information regarding anyone else having this problem... One other thing I've noticed is that my steering steers much easier to the right then to the left while turning the motor with the boat on the trailer. If anyone has any ideas as to what could be going on I'd sure appreciate your input.

    Thanks!

    Loren,
Go to this web site and look at the red clips in the pics. http://www.fishingworld.com/ProRule/
They fit over your steering rods to keep your motor from turning. I made some out of PVC pipe. Cut it where it will slip over the steering rod. They are easy to put on and take off.

Be thankful they aren't liberal enough to turn to the left

I would remove the tiller bolt and see if the motor turns from lock to lock without any change in resistance. Without the tiller bolt installed it should swing from side to side relatively easily.

You may want to check with Teleflex beforehand and see if you have the new and improved high strength tiller bolt, seeing as how you're going to take it out, may as well replace it with a new one if necessary.

I also have a walleye boat with a 225 and don't have the issue. I run a transom savor though and when I put it on the motor/trailer it can't move any direction. The transom savor sits on the loading roller, so it isn't preventing left or right movement, just up and down.

    What boat do you have?

I wish I had a picture of what I am talking about. Center you motor, then measure the length of the steering arms on both sides. Cut 2 pieces of PVC to those lengths. The PVC should be just slightly larger than the steering arms, 3/4 of an inch maybe? Take a jig saw and make 2 cuts on each PVC lengthwise so that you cut a hole down the length of the pipe, Center your motor, then pop these onto the steering arms and your motor should not move any more!!!

A friend w/ a boat shop in Florida sent these to me after seeing my motor cocked to the side one day. It's a fancy version of the PVC trick, but they fit my teleflex system perfectly. I have not run them yet, but they snap on securely so i think these will be great.

I bought a Lock N Haul. Great deal. Engine is rock solid going down the road, and easy to store. You won't have the problem of broken toters anymore either. A lot has been said on the forums about this product, but it really works!!! It is my understanding the new Skeeters are shipping with them now. They are a BBC sponsor also.

Just remember to take them off before launching. Take it from me, it's a panicky feeling to be in gear backing off the trailer and the boat won't steer.

My SeaStar system was doing that several years ago. I found that I could wiggle the motor side-to-side about 1/2" with my hands - not good since it shouldn't move at all! I did as instructed in the last section here - SeaStar Oil Level and System Check. That took care of my problem and the motor now stays exactly where I leave it.

I use the steeing locks posted above. They cost about $5 at Academy and work great.
