    moving scope

I want to move the scope on my rifle so that it fits me a little better. I feel like it is too far forward and when I shoulder my rifle, I don't have a good sight picture until I move my head into an unnatural position. My question is how much will that effect my aim? I will be resighting the rifle, but will it only be off an inch or so and be easy to resight or will it really throw it off? I will probably be moving the scope a 1/2 in to an inch if that.

    Ryan,

There's actually too many variables to say just how much the point of impact will change. Ring alignment being the biggest one. Tube roundness, squareness and run-out of the scope will have an effect also. It will PROBABLY be "on paper" but I wouldn't verture a guess much beyond that. If the rings have been lapped, something very few hunters do, then there's a better chance that you're point of impact won't change much. If you have a torque wrench, or can borrow one, use it when tightening the rings. You'll be surprised at just how much pressure the rings apply to the scope tube when you tighten the screws.
Also, make sure you have at least a 1/8"-1/16" gap between the rings and the turret, and the where the taper on the bell begins. A scope can easily get damaged from the recoil of even standard calibers if either of them is touching the rings.

    Hope that helps a little.

    Re: moving scope (santeerangerman)

thanks. I got the rifle with the scope already mounted and it just doesn't feel right to me so I"m going to try and move it to a better position. It was supposed to be bore sighted when I got it, but it was no where close and took forever to sight in because of it and I was hoping it wouldn't throw it off by much. I was planning on changing ammo anyway so I would have to resight it anyway.

That's why I like Leupolds (and other scopes like them) with generous eye relief.
