    Son's 1st Turkey Hunt

My brother and I took my 10 year old son Wyatt turkey hunting for his first time yesterday morning. He has been looking forward to this for several months. We had a ball yesterday morning. My brother did the calling and I did the filming. We had a nice bird come of the roost first thing on the other side of the field. He started working our way gobbling everytime my brother hit the call. Once he saw the decoys it was all over but the shooting. He came in like he was on a string strutting the whole way. Wyatt made a perfect shot on him at 25 yards. The best thing is we got it on film. Here is a picture of him with his turkey. 11" beard, 1" spurs, and 22 lbs. We took it to the taxidermist yesterday to get mounted for his room.

Re: Sons 1st Turkey Hunt (BP in ME)

He definately loves to hunt. He harvested his first deer when he was 6. He never really showed an interest in Turkey hunting until this year. My brother doesn't have any kids of his own and loved spending the time with his nephew. My wife thinks us grown men enjoyed it more than Wyatt did. If she could have seen the grin on his face that morning when he walked up that gobbler I think she would change her story.

That's a great bird. My son is 2 and I can't wait until I can take him hunting. Actually contemplated it last weekend but wife talked me out of it. I thought I could keep him in the pop up with me. Maybe just wishful thinking...

Nice bird... I'll bet he's hooked for life. Did you get a 20 gauge for the youngster?

    Re: (idaho guide)

Buzzbait- The video is on Hi8 tape and I have no idea how to get it posted even if I could figure out how to get on the computer.

Champion221elite- I was going to get him a youth model 20 but he wanted to shoot my Benelli 12. I bought some 2 3/4" turkey loads for it. I let him shoot it a few times before season and he handled it just fine. He knows how to handle a gun very well for his age. He killed his first deer at the age of 6. He uses my 25WSSM for deer.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I am looking forward to next week. He still has one tag to fill.

Was thinking the same thing. No the poor kid won't get to know the thrill of drugs, crime, or just being a social deviant. JUST KIDDING!

Honestly, great job and keep up the good work! Our season opens up Saturday. Hoping to get Zack on a bird!

Re: Sons 1st Turkey Hunt (NY Trooper)

He has been chomping at the bit to go again. In Missouri you can harvest two birds. Since he killed a bird during youth season weekend he was not able to hunt the first week of regular season which opened last week. We are going again Saturday and I can't wait. I think I get more excited than he does.

We hunt on my dads farm and he called yesterday to tell me that there has been a couple more nice toms strutting in his bottom field every morning this week. I am hoping I can get him on another bird Saturday morning.

So far the Killer B decoy has done the trick. I has accounted for 4 big tom kills this year.
