1998 Evinrude 150 FICHT

Hello everyone. I just purchased a 1998 Stratos 285 PE and I just love the boat. It has a 1998 Evinrude 150 FICHT. I started reading horror stories posted throughout the internet about boat owners having major problems with this engine. I took the boat out over the weekend and it ran fine other than the oil warning alarm sounding. I was made aware that this could happen despite the motor getting oil. Any thoughts or comments, good or bad, about this motor. I would really appreciate any suggestions as to services I could have done to avoid problems down the road. Thanks.

The Ficht and DI engines need a good free flowing oil in colder temps. In my DI , I got oil alarms with the semi/syn oil in colder weather, switched to XD-100 full syn and my problems went away... Were all updates applied to the engine?

Thanks for the info. I don't know if the updates were done as the original owner is deceased.

I had a 1998 175H.P. Ficht. The motor was a strong motor. Like Bassmiester says use the XD100 oil. The updates I had were the pinned heads.

I run the same motor 98 175, you run xd100 year round?
