Dang if my kid (DJ13) doesn't know how to hunt and he just started hunting less than 2 yrs ago. The young man's a natural. Gotta tell ya the story..he called me at the office at 4:53 PM this afternoon, told me to get my butt home cuz he wanted to take me turkey hunting (have never turkey hunted in my life) for a nice bird I videoed last night in my back yard. So, home I came, set up at 6 PM, at 7:15 PM here's the result:







Ya just can't beat that! Great young man, Dane is, and what a wonderful experience to share with your son!!!

Thats what its all about right there. My fondest hunting memories are not when I killed my biggest deer or bird but when I was in the stand with or calling for my son watching him get his first deer or bird. Great job and cool story.

Four years ago I took my (then) 68 year old father on his first turkey hunt. He has been an avid quail hunter for 40+ years, but he had never been on a turkey hunt in his life. He grew up in western Oklahoma and wild turkeys didn't exist in Washita County back then. I have hunted turkey since I was about 17 with my buddies.

On the drive out I explained to Dad that turkey hunting usually is a lesson in patience. I told him that whatever can go wrong usually does on a turkey hunt. Anyway, we hit the river bottom that morning and it turned into the perfect hunt. Several toms gobbled from the roost to my owl call. We moved into position and got set up. I yelped twice after they flew down and within 5 minutes two full grown toms nearly ran over us. Dad shot and dropped the first one (10 1/2") and I jumped up and shot my tom (10") on the wing. Dad was more excited than a kid at Christmas. I bet he told that story 30 times before the week was over.

The next 2 years we repeated the same hunt with the same results. The best part is watching him every winter as he gets ready for the season. It's like he has been rejuvinated as a hunter. It really has been an awesome last 3 years with Dad. I hope everyone gets the chance at something like that with their dad or their sons.
