    What happened inside???

    2009 250 HO.

Fished Friday 3 hours practiced for tourney, no issues engine preformed flawlessly. went out Saturday noticed it seemed a little more sluggish to plane out, but figured it might be the warmer humid morning, but it just felt a little different. Fish most of the day ran around tor 3 times. then on way back to ramp put it on plane still did not feel right, but got planed out and opened up at WOT to see if speed was same. Pretty close to my usual. so back off cruise about 4800 r's, 2 mins later acted like it jumped out of gear, will not go forward or reverse. Got towed back. Prop looks great, hub is undamaged. looked at case and see a marble size ping/bubble on port side case housing looked cracked from inside. Enguaged the shift lever and prop will spin freely by hand, both forward and reverse sounds like a sack of gravel in it. What happened inside???

Probably broke the pinion gear. Warranty will cover it.

More than likely, your pinion gear came apart and a chunk of it tried to come outside the housing. This gear is @ 2" in diameter and under tremendous load situations. A common occurance, unfortunately. A new aftermarket gearcase with warranty is the most cost efficient way to get you back on the water unless you have a factory warranty plan for your gearcase. You can always find a used case to replace this one, but you never know what you're getting.

I assume it is under factory warranty. I am original owner and had 5 years on when bought May of 2009.

Well, got the word today, BRP is sending a new LU, it is the Magnum M2 LU, not the Lightning. From what I gather, talking to dealer and reading on internet. All replacement LU's are the magnum series. Also the new 2011's went back to the Magnum LU. So that tells me there is a pretty significant problem with the L2 (Lightning) lower units. They were only around for 2-3 years, correct?

They were introduced in '01 I believe. The magnum is a heavy duty case that will work well for you. You may notice some slight high speed difference, but otherwise, a good replacement.

Yeah, I think it is a good replacement, from what I understand most L2 warranty jobs are being replaced with the M2. I also read that the Magnum will probably have the 1.85 gears. If this is the case I may need a new prop, correct? I currently run a 26 Fury & a 27 Tempest. They both turn about 5750 - 5800 r's.

    How much you reckon?

Your H.O. case had 1.86:1, so I would say you're O.K. with present propping. I would say your speed will decrease somwhere in the 2-5 range, depending of course on your set-up. This is just a ballpark guess.

09 250HO with a 1.86 ratio out of the box in an L2?

I thought they were all 1.71 when they left Sturdivant on the 250HO in 09?

Same thing I thought. I know I had an '06 225 etec HO w/1.86 gears and ran a 28" prop on it. My '09 250 I was told had 1.71 gears. I assumed it was true 'cause I was unable to turn the 28' to my satisfaction. So dropped down to the aforementioned props a 27 Tempest & a 26 fury.

What I have read is the new Magnum LU(M2), will have 1.85 ratio. If so my props may turn to high.

2 mph I can handle but 5 mph I will be highly disappointed.

    Re: What happened inside??? (rodbender1)

You guys may be right on the ratio. It seems some different cases have been introduced in the last few years that I'm not familiar with. The last H.O. I worked on was the old style 1.86:1 standard size case. Sorry if I created any confusion.

I'm not waiting for mine to go out. BRP is upgrading to the new model and it will be installed next Tuesday, should be getting a new prop also.

Well, I'll tell you I won't be happy with pathetic speed. But this is actually the 2nd LU in less than a year(10months), The first one I reluctantly took the blame for. It blew up inside, said due to impact. prop shaft had a slight wobble to it they said, but no damage to prop or flo hub, I went ahead and did the insurance route. But not this time.

If the speeds are bad I'll handle it for a little while. I am tired if being down. then I'll start looking for a new rig.

    Re: What happened inside??? (rodbender1)

I talked to the BRP support tech at the FLW here two weeks ago. I asked him how much difference the FLW guys are seeing. He told me some see one-two MPH some see none. Of course these are on Rangers too. Propped right I would guess they would be the same or close.
