    need help picking a shotgun

What the title says. I have it narrowed down to a few shot guns. I will need it for deer and waterfowl. I would like to get a rifle for deer, but I cannot justify the expense (right now).

    My narrowed down choices are

    Stoeger p-350
    Stoeger 2000
    Mossberg 535
    Benelli Nova

I have also thought about the Browning BPS and Remington 870. But both of these are heavy (I know the Benelli is too, but I'd rather that then these two for the price.) and come with a limited choke. Not wanting to have to buy extras on top of the price of the gun.

    Thanks
    Scott

Re: need help picking a shotgun (cranks)

there are lots of good shotguns out there, if I were buying I would buy an 870 and also buy a fully rifled slug barrel with a cantaliver scope mount for deer, that would cover any kind of hunting you would want to do, a slug gun with hornady sst slugs is hard to beat for a brush/drive gun.

Anything but Mossberg. I've heard more horror stories about that brand than all the others combined. (misfires, guns goin off while on safety, etc....) I personally would go with the Remington 870. I have one (i use mine for bird huntin), but they are real versatile, easy to maintain and clean, and since they are so popular there are a lot of accessories. JMHO

Re: need help picking a shotgun (colreb2000)

I have 3 Mossbergs in the family and haven't had a lick of trouble with any of them. My 500 is over 25 years old now. Law enforcement use to use Mossberg's quite a bit. I'm not sure if they do anymore or not. My boy has the 835 now and he really likes it.

The 870 is a good gun, but I hate where the safety is located. That style of safety has cost me more birds than I can remember. Keep that in mind when looking at guns.

I looked at the Nova a couple of years ago too. It seemed like a pretty decent gun.

I have a mosberg 835 , Rem 870, and Benelli Nova. The 870 is a great gun for the money but I would buy benelli over those any day. Mossberg is not a bad gun just not as nice ( fit and finish) than the others. The recoil worse too! I own 4 Benelli shotguns and I would not trade them for the world!!! good luck!! ~~MATT

Also stay away from stoger products. I know benelli owns them but for what you pay for those guns you can get a nova or 870 and the stogers are not even in the same league!!

I love the benellis, but I would say the 870, cause you can get a rifled slug barrel for it much cheaper than the Benelli.

out of what is listed, i'd go with the mossberg or the benelli. i've got the 535 w/thumb through stock for turkey's, and i don't notice the recoil. i've ran slugs thoough the 500's with canti-barrels and have proven to be very accurate. the nova, i personally do not have experience with them, but have some friends who swear by'em.

I have a Bennelli Nova tactical and I really like it, it feels better to me than my 870 but if they had Super Novas available when I bought mine I would have bought one of them instead. It is nice to be able to shim or change a stock for a better fit.

Thanks for all your input. Looks like I'll be going with the Benelli. I liked that gun the most from the start, but have had all the others mentioned. Now I just need to convince Santa I need one under the tree.

personally if money is no object I would go with a super Nova the recoil supression stock is amazing, but for a cheap stout workhorse a 870 Express Super mag is a lot of bang for the buck (or Duck).

if i was to buy an 870 it would have to be an older one.the quality has gone way down hill recently!you will love the benelli nova get the super nova.the fit and finish and action is much more detailed than the others.and if i were to buy a cheap shotgun it would be a pump.dont skimp on an auto loader.ive went that route i now own a benelli sbe2!

I agree that the Express is not as well finished as the Nova or Wingmaster for that matter. But for a little more than 300 bucks it is a tough tough gun to beat. the only issue that i have has was to replace the stock as it started to crack after 5 years and probably 2500-3000 rounds.

Out of what you have listed, the Benelli Nova or save even more and get an 870. My buddy has the same 870 he has been using since he was 15. He is 38 now

Re: need help picking a shotgun (cranks)

Man I thought this would be easy. I keep being told that the Benelli's are nice, but impossible to get parts, and even the gun itself. I've thought about the Mossbergs, as the price is where my wife likes it, but haven't been able to handle one yet.

There is a Remington 870 combo here. It's full camo, not just the stock and fore, but the entire gun. I cannot find it anywhere to get info. They tell me it is brand new? Yet it's not on Remingtons site. They want $635.00 for it, not sure. I know I can get just a basic 870 for around $350.00 if I go out of town.

I guess I just need to pull the trigger and get one, as I don't like borrowing.
