What weight were you looking at for your son?

He is shooting my bear 45 @28, something in that range. He has been shooting for a couple of years and can pull it and can hit with it. He is a big boy for his age and he wants "his" bow. Recurve or longbow, it don't matter to him, as long as it's shootable.![]()

Believe it or not, Misty shoots "traditional" when she shoots. She's a member of that group that recreates the Middle Ages, and only longbows or recurves are allowed. She's no great shot, but she has fun doing it. I forget what brand of bow she has now. Obviously she hasn't done it for a while.
She refers to compounds as "Bows with training wheels."![]()
Traditional is an understatement for me. I've been an archery hunter from day one...I've never killed a deer with a gun. I got tired of the compound bow and decided I wanted a recurve or long bow. When I saw the price tag on one of those fancy fiberglass bows I almost had a heart attack. I started researching on how to make my own bows. I ended up going completely primitive with all my gear for a few years. I made all of my gear and harvested several deer, hogs, and turkey with it.
I've made several (40-50) bows out of Bodark, Elm, Oak, and Hickory trees. I've used river reed arrows, and made my own out of cedar. I learned how to knap my own points out of flint and glass, and I tie them on the shafts with sinew. My favorite is a snakey bodark self bow that is 54" nock to nock , 72lbs @ 27", that shoots a 500 gr. cedar arrow 212 fps.
It's actually very easy to do. I pretty much learned everything from 3 books:
The Boyer's Bible; Vol I, Vol II, Vol III
I highly recommend them if you'd like to start making your own equipment.
