Sporatic fire on #3

The last time I ran my boat my rpms went down from 5800 to 4800 WOT. I pushed the choke and and the engine bogged indicating ignition problems and not fuel issues. I thought I had a bad coil. I started my engine at night and saw sparks coming from the #3 coil. What I didn't realize or failed to mention is that this spark was only happening maybe once every 30 seconds or so. All the other plugs are getting much more spark. Got a new coil, cleaned grounds on motor, installed, still hard to get on plane and 4800 rpms. Every minute or so, the engine will hit on all 6.

In one of my earlier post, Fred mentioned that if the coil didn't fix my problem, I probably have timer base issues. Does this seem more likely now that a new coil didn't fix the situation.

Is this something that I can replace myself. I've replaced rectifiers, power packs, small stuff in the past.

I guess my question is: Do I just mark the position of the flywheel, remove it, replace timer base, reattach wires, replace flywheel in same spot, fire up and go....

    Thanks guys,

the flywheel will only go on in one spot , its got a half moon key, replacing the timer base is pretty straight forward , however the engine timing must be checked after the installation of a new base.

If you have replaced the stator, you can replace the timer base....

Re: Sporatic fire on #3 (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

Other than timer base and flywheel key, is there any other pertinent parts that need to be purchased for this endeavor?

I'm still hoping it IS the timer base. Any words of wisdom from experience.. Anything else I should look for?

If you do remove the flywheel, be sure to check that the locations of each magnet inside are properly aligned and intact. These can break and move on you and create a situation that you've described.

I was reading the manual and it mentioned this. Sure hoping they are not loose. Flywheel $1200.......The manual does mention putting the magnet(s) back in place with epoxy on some flywheels. Is this adviseable???

    BTW......thanks for the advice gentlemen!!!

Absolutely advisable !! Especially considering the cost of a new flywheel. You can actually get a repair kit from the dealer that works very well.

Hang in there, you'll get it. Sometimes these things can be tedious to track down.

Yep, these older motors can drive you NUTS. In the last year and half, it has been rebuilt, fuel pump went out, ignition switch went bad, rectifier went bad, and now this. But, I guess it is better than paying a boat NOTE on a new one!!!!

I told a friend the other day, for the first 14 years, I just pointed the boat in the direction I was headed and it went. Now, not so much......His reply, "They no longer come with a 15 year warranty"..............
