Can I just buy line from say Home Depot that's good? I'm sure I could go to West Marine for an all out reaming otherwise.

I'd recommend against it. Get the lines with the loops in the ends for easy connection to your cleats. They are soft and won't rot after a week in the sun. I think even Walmart carries them.
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity,
nothing else matters.
