    Ethanol In Fuel

I have read that you are not supposed to use gasoline that contains Ethanol. Does anyone have any experience with this and is it a real problem? I believe most gasolines now contain some ethanol and in the future all of them probably will, and the price of corn is going up (along with everything else). Anyway, can you shed some light on this topic?
    Thanks,

I work at a boat dealer and I asked the mechanics the same question. Their reply was... Definately bad... especially 2-strokes... said it is ok every now and then, but try to avoid as much as possible and don't make it a habit to use it. As far as 4-strokes doesn't hurt as much according to mechanics but still would try to avoid as much as possible. Hope this helps!

I believe many newer engines built in the last 5-7 years or so are designed to run on up to a 10% blend, which is what most areas that are using ethanol blend to. They are not designed for higher blends like the E85.

Stabil has come out with a fuel treatment that is supposed to help with the ethanol.

    Re: Ethanol In Fuel (Rmart30)

I deliver gas for a living in Alabama. Won't be long before everybody is using it. about 85% of stations are using it now in North Alabama. Congress passed a law a couple of years ago that everybody has to go to it but i'm not sure when the deadline is. Ethanol attracts water like crazy!!!! Water doesn't stay mixed with gas for very long at all but it will mix with ethanol and stay mixed for a long time!!! We can't even drop in a tank with more than half inch of water in it. We dont have much choice in using ethanol gas for very much longer unfortunately.......it's all politics, just to make them look like they're trying to do something for the environment. it takes 1.29 gallons of gas to make 1 gallon of ethanol. Plus now they've discovered that the pollution from ethanol is possibly more harmful than from gasoline. google health risks of ethanol and see what you come up with......the whole ethanol thing caused by tree huggers is a bunch of garbage........ We're already having trouble with it eating up the gaskets in our trailers in the three months that we've been blending it with gasoline on almost every load. It's also wayyyyy more dangerous than gasoline for us that haul it and others on the road around us. It's way harder to put out an ethanol fire than a gasoline fire and many fire departments aren't trained in and dont have the necessary stuff to deal with ethanol fires yet. It's a whole different animal than gasoline. My friend rolled a truck over with a full load of ethanol a few years ago near the terminal in Birmingham and burned the truck to a crisp and flooded the drainage system with burning ethanol and almost blew up the huge cemetary.....wasn't his fault by the way, he was hit by a drunk driver. luckily he was thrown out through the windshield and only got some cuts on his forearm.

Now thats the stuff you never hear about and never will from the Govt, or the oil Co's I can still get regular unleaded and can even pay the same price for it as the Ethanol, I'm getting to the point where I burn it in my other vehicles and stay away from the ethanol

    Re: Ethanol In Fuel (Strat201)

Heres the thing you have to be specific about....... There are two types of ethanol fuel that you can buy at the pumps here in the midwest where ethanol is much more popular then in other regions of the US. The first is E85 which most of you have heard about and many vehicle manufacturers now advertise is usable in the newest cars and trucks. This type contains 85% ethanol. The second is usually an 89 or 90 octane fuel which contains 10% ethanol and is extremely common at pumps in the midwest. I have personally used the 10% in every vehicle I own, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, boat, truck, lawnmower, and the list goes on. I can't speak for anything E85 related but I haven't had an issue as of yet with regular ethanol
