    Water Temperature

    Newbie question!

Do you use a water temperature gauge when fishing?
Do the gauges just measure the surface temperature? (Is there a calculation for figuring out what the temp is say 5-8 feet below the surface).
Is there a recommended gauge out there (my fish finder does not have one on it).

Wow, more questions, are the particular temps that the fishing is better?

    Thanks everyone.

    Re: Water Temperature (HammysSkeeter)

I have a water temp gauge and I wouldnt do without it.

The gauge just measures the surface temp. That all you really need. You will learn what the fish do in relation to the surface temp changes.

Your fish finder may accept a water temp gauge. Pull out the manual and see if there is a spot to plug in a gauge. This was what I did on my old Humminbird.

You can get one of these pretty cheap.....I had two of them on my old rig. I got them at WalMart for about ten bucks apiece. They work surprisingly well.

    Re: Water Temperature (Landinlunkers)

I have a temp gauge hooked up to my flasher at the console that reads surface temps. I have the transducer on my trolling motor that has a temp probe on it. The transducer is one foot below the surface. I have had a differnence of 7 degrees between the surface and 1 foot below the surface. I do also have the minn kota temp gauge that I confirmed the flasher is pretty accurate and transducer is pretty accurate. I even tied the minn kota probe to a jig and let it sit on the bottom in 12 feet of water during this winter and the water was pretty close to the transducer temp readings, just about a degree or to cooler.

    Re: Water Temperature (javelin225H.O.)

I picked up a new fishfinder for the front of the boat, and this one has a temp gauge on the transducer. So now i have to mount it on the trolling motor too.

My next investigation will be the what the different temperatures mean for fishing.
