    Good rebuilder?

I have a 1983 175 Johnson that is about ready for a rebuild. Anyone know of a good rebuilder in Oklahoma? Frank? The boat is a 1983 Ebbtide Dynatrak so I'm also considering selling as is and buying another boat. Money is tight for a bit so looking for cost effective options.

Riverside marine in AR will do it for you. But the money you are going to put into the motor may outweigh your return on investment. An 83 175 market value is in the $500.00 range mint. Piston/ring set is ~$105.00 each. Tough call on that. Not including gasket set, wrist pin bearing and extras. About $1K in parts not including labor.

Thats about what I've found on the parts. A shop will rebuild for $3000 - $3500 here in Oklahoma unless anyone has other advise. As we all know if I sell and buy another used I could be in the same situation. Not fortunate enough to be able to afford new yet. If i could find a good used one for around $1500 then I may consider that as well. Just looking for options. Been around boats for a long time but not had to look at this kind of repair.

I'll look up Riverside and give them a call.

I wish I could help you. Not seeing many cross flows anymore. BRP not wanting to pay for old parts any longer. I only use their parts good or bad but can't beat the warranty.

Thanks for the input. Checking out different sites for used options now. If the boat was newer it would make this much easier.

I know Frank (TotalBeverage) lives close and he had a guy do some work on a Johnson he picked up with one of his projects but I don't know who. Where you at Frank?

Frank has a good wrench. Hit up Frank on the restoration forum.

The machine shops I know of are automotive. I'm in Oklahoma so would I ship you the powerhead or need to bring the boat to you? How long have you been doing this?

Bad thing is if the cylinder needs to be sleeved, most parts houses now sell only solid sleeves. That means you need a very good machinist at the shop. He has to cut all the ports and then de-burr them. You used to be able to get the cross=flow sleeves pre-cut, no more. Loopers yep but X-flows not so much.
