I currently own a 96 175 FastStrike; model J175GLEDB, serial num. G04061097. I recently had a rebuilt done. When they took her apart they found scoring on only 1 side of pistons and walls. What would cause only one side to go like that.

Cheap oil and lack of maintenance.
I only use Johnson oil. Besides wouldnt all cylinders have been scored not just one side of power head.
Was the scoring along the exhaust side? Did you see any piston edges eaten away right near the scoring side?

Sounds like stuck rings from the lack of decarbing = lack of maintenance.
If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

All 3 cylinders were scored but only on one side of powerhead. My question is WHY on only one side and not all of them.
Although my avatar shows Carnac, could you share which bank is scored? Port or Starboard?

Yeah, inquiring minds want to know. If you don't know right from left or port from starboard, was it exhaust side, intake side, top side, or bottom side, or inside?

Ill have to talk to my mechanic. I cant rememberv form sure. I didnt realize it would make a diff. Ill get back.
Just got off the phone with my mechanic. Hes pretty sure everything scored was on the port side. Hopefuuky that helps.
Ive had this powerhead rebulit since; but when the motor quit on me no alarms went off even though they apparently all work fine. When this first happened I wasnt able to get the motor started till after I got back to the ramp; about 3 hrs later. I also checked the plugs for damage when she went down; but they seemed fine. Still dont know why no alarms went off.
Sorta sounds to me like you had a firing problem since it dropped all on one side... like it lost fire, the cylinders loaded with gas >???????? Just a thought... I am sure one of the Gurus will chime at anytime...:)![]()
