Hey guys, Hope yall had a good christmas.
Can anyone tell me the typical symptoms of a head gasket leak? My exhaust looks lighter than i remember.

Loss of compression on one cylinder, steam cleaned spark plug on the same cylinder.

Hard to tell as 95% of the exhaust goes out the prop. You may see some water leakage out of one of the heads while running it on muffs with the cover off.

Ok, just got back from trying to fish. Motor idled fine. Got up on plane and RPM's were falling like a studder then my alarm and check engine light came on. Stopped, looked at the plugs and they looked ok. Started it up again and it did the same thing.

How about a model number so we know exactly what motor you have?

sorry. The # is E200STLECE. Went through the carbs this weekend. They were clean. No plugging in hoses on pos. pressure side. Got fire on all 6. Compression was 1-90, 2-90, 3-90, 4-90, 5-85, 6-84. Installed all new from dip tube to pump. Still surging around 4500rpm, sometimes lower. I have a glass vile filter and it fills up with air when I hit the throttle but I can't find any air leaks. What do you guys think?

Sucking air somewhere before the filter.

If that's one of those glass filters with a chrome nipple on each end and a round screen in the middle - then GET RID OF IT PRONTO

Hook up a piece of clear fuel line temporarily and check for air bubbles in the lines. Keep moving the clear line toward the fuel tank if you keep seeing bubbles.

What boat is this motor on? I had a similiar situation a few years ago and found that the breather hoses on my gas tanks had filled with gas from hitting a big wave and weren't allowing the tank to breath. Cut off excess hose and was good to go. Just a suggestion....

I run an off-white plastic in-line fuel filter, don't know what the guru's recommend, but I too have heard those glass ones are bad juju...

I'm running a 400 Javelin. Where was this exess hose? Mine goes straight from the top of the tank behind the dip tube to the vent behind the fill nozzle. It always vents when i fill up.

Mine ran from the top of the tanks to the vents behind the gas caps. They had alot of slack in them and created a dip similiar to a plumbing "P trap" and wouldn't let my engine breath.....worth looking at..

Common issue with a 201 stratos. The Factory put too much hose on the vent line creating the "P" trap. What happened was from filling the tank too much and the fuel flowing out the vent. The line had too much of a dip in it and it wouldn't let the fuel go back into the tank. It's driven a bunch of tech's crazy. Wouldn't be surprised if the 400 is the same. Take off your access panel and check it. Just slip a piece of styrofoam under the dip to level it. If you cut the line and cut it too short you'll have to take the tank cover off and put in a new vent line.
