    Scanning visible fish?

    Hi there,

    I am having a fun with SI / 998cSI. :-)

It is really useful tool and brings lots of discovery but it also confuses me at times...

Today I was moving my boat by trolling motor around 2 - 3 mph at very shallow water (around 3 feet depth) in the backwater area of a reserver lake.

As the water is very clear, I can see everything around me in the water, and I found a large carp (around 2 feet length). I am very curious how the SI shows this one, so I approached besides of it. The SI range is 45 ft wide for right/left and sensitivity is 10, chart speed is 3, frequency is 455khz, SI Enhance's Sharpness is "Low".

I was pretty confident to show the fish in the SI, slowly went through its left side (I remember 20 - 30 feet far away) but ... the object (the fish shadow) didn't appear in the screen!

Can we explain how it didn't show up in SI screen or do I miss anything, any insight?

I can say from experience that if it was on or almost on the bottom there will be no sonar shadow...just the long white image...I see huge catfish and gar near the bottom all year here...

The higher in the water the fish is...the farther away the sonar shadow will be...

Others may know more and can also help...

Here is an example of a school of gizzard shad in less than 3ft of water to give you an idea of what to look for. My boat was pushing these fish and I was kicking up mud (Doug would be proud) LOL

Mike didn't know you had water that shallow! And could get that boat in there!

Like these images the closer the fish is to the bottom the shadow will be attachedif it's suspended is the only time you will see a shadow.

    Very massive & interesting pic

Thanks for insight, I remember I didn't even recognize the white line, but my understanding based on what you guys mentioned is "it should be a white and no shadow". As my software is up-to-date, perhaps i missed something...gotta keep experimenting with SI. Very fun tool indeed.

Thanks you guys! I really appreciate it.
